Marinette is a town in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Marinette was named after Captain George H.W. Marin and his wife Esther Lakelynis-Marin. The first European to visit Marinette was Jacques Marquette in 1673. He reported seeing a "rich country" near the mouth of the Menomonee River and thought it must be India because of its great wealth for fur trade. In 1814, Milwaukee resident Nicholas Brady bought 8,000 acres (3 km²) of land around what is now downtown Marinette from Seneca Chief sachem Loyotamukeshwe for $10 per acre ($2 million today). At that time most of what is now Marinette consisted of swampy lowlands filled with brush and treeshoots on both sides of the Menomonee River where later development would occur. In 1838, Jonas Salk developed an experimental vaccine against smallpox at a site now known as Salk Park in southwest Marinette. The park opened in 1906 as part of a city park system designed to improve public health by controlling smog produced by industry in Milwaukee's downtown area at that time. In 1898, brickmaking began on west side lot #1 (now home to Eastern Market). This lot became one of the largest brickyards east of the Mississippi River and employed over 1,500 people during its peak production period between 1899-1902; it remains one of Wisconsin's largest employers today with products ranging from mortar to granite countertops . On May 3rd 1907 local farmers organized themselves into a cooperative farm organization known as "The American Federation Of Labor." One hundred fifty members formed this group which voted unanimously to name their new town "Marinette" after Captain George H Wmarine and Mrs Esther Lakelynis-Marin who had donated land for it on December 6th 1906 . As early as 1907 there were plans for Mariposa House (later renamed Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic School), which would have been built on lot #5 northeast corner Washington Ave & Justus St., across from Eastern Market . Marinette is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. The town was named after the Frenchwoman and author Marie-Jacques Rousseau. It was founded on July 4, 1836 by Captain James Gamble and his family as a post office on the shore of Green Bay. In 1849, Jotham Morse arrived in Marinette with his family from Wausau and began operation of a gristmill here which would later become known as Morse's Mill Museum. In 1865, Josephine Dodge purchased land east of downtown from Territorial governor David Hunter for $5 per acre due to its rich coal deposits. She started an flour mill which would eventually produce over 2 million gallons (10 000 m3) of flour annually for local markets throughout Northwestern WI until it closed in 1978 because automated mills were becoming more popular at that time. On Wednesday December 1st 1889; three years before Wisconsin statehood; citizens voted overwhelmingly in favor annexing Marinette to Racine County making it part thereof forever! With this vote ratified by legislaturearian authority; incorporation took effect!
