Marinette is a small town in the Wisconsin Union County seat of Marinette, located about 25 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The population was 2,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The Town of Marinette was organized in 1855 when a group of Danish immigrants settled on an unincorporated portion of what is now Marinette. In 1872, the town name was changed to accommodate local German settlers and it became known as "the Bluff". The town's first post office opened in 1875. In 1895, Marinette voters approved a $25,000 expenditure for a new high school which would serve all residents within its boundaries. That same year, the first public golf course was opened in what is now Marinette. In 1907, construction began on what would become one of Wisconsin's most famous landmarks: Waukesha Lakefront Park (named for nearby Waukesha). The park features a number of hiking and biking trails as well as picnicking and swimming opportunities. A fire destroyed much of downtown Marinette in 1922 but no one was injured; this event has been cited as one reason why development around downtown never really took off until after World War II. In 1950, the then-new U S Highway 6 crossed through town from north to south and created an immediate community growth spurt with businesses opening up along that section of highway; many remain today including KFC, Subway sandwich shops and several truck stops along that stretch today still use that name or its predecessor names such as US 6 Truck Stop on Hwy 6 just North Of downtown .Nowadays there are few if any commercial properties remaining along US 6 east side from near where it crossed into town to present day Midtown Marina
