The Marinette Infantry Regiment (MAR) was a regiment of the United States Army that fought in World War I. The unit was mobilized on July 16, 1916 and arrived in France on October 1, 1916. On November 25, 1916, the MAR was redesignated as the 5th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and arrived at Camp Funston near Monmouth Junction on December 12th. The regiment saw action during the Battle of Argonne Forest on January 3, 1917 and later participated in the Battle of Belleau Wood on January 8th. The regiment relieved troops from Company C of the 119th Brigade Combat Team at Fort Snelling on February 15th and then relieved troops from Companies K-2-1-2 at Fort Snelling on March 2nd. The 5th Wisc Infantry Regiment departed Fort Snelling for home leave on April 6th. On May 9rd, 1917, the MAR was ordered to duty in defenses of Tuscaloosa County when it learned of German plans to cross over into Alabama Soviet Union via Mobile Bay. On May 17th, 1917, while en route to reinforce forces along Demopolis River near Selma Alabama, members of Company A were attacked by hostile natives and all but two men died; this event is commonly known as the Selma Massacre. On June 10TH 1915 Company A reached its destination after spending three days marching through heavy rain conditions; however only one man remained healthy enough to return home with his unit six weeks later due to an illness contracted durng their march On July 3RD 1918 Company A moved forward again under orders not to rest for another three days before assaulting Bourges Cathedral which they did successfully accomplished Company G retired from combat early due to being too sick or wounded

Some of these stories date back to the early 1800s when this small village was founded on a peninsula in the Wabash River. The early residents were pioneer farmers and fishermen who made their homes near the water. The town’s name is derived from a local girl named Marinette who lived in the community for many years. In 1836, the town was chartered as a village by Governor John C. Smith and incorporated as a municipality by Mayor John Hargrave in 1847. The first mayor was Dr. George Bogan and it took until 1865 for the first post office to open. For several years after its incorporation, Marinette struggled with money problems that led to its bankruptcy in 1860. However, it bounced back within few years thanks to an agricultural boom that began around that time and helped bring new life to Marinette Village. Marinette Village saw major growth during World War II because of its strategic location at an intersection of military routes connecting Europe with America. This caused significant development within the town includingthe construction of numerous businesses and residences including two hospitals and three schools which remain standing today. In 1871, the town of Marinette was founded by Captain George H. Morrison and his family. The town's first post office was opened in 1872. In 1888, the town became a city with a population of around 300 people. The city annexed the neighboring towns of New Berlin and West Allis in 1907. In 1916, Marinette became part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area as a result of its annexation by Milwaukee. The following year, it passed a resolution to become an official state capital. On July 1, 2003, Marinette became the 31st city in Wisconsin to be incorporated as a result of Act 10 from then-Governor Tommy Thompson.
