Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,236 at the 2010 census and 6,814 as of 2019. It is the county seat of Manitowoc County and it is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Manitowoc" means "distant village." The first settler in what is now Manitowoc County was Nicholas Schmid in 1838. By 1848, there were twenty-four settlers living in what is now Manitowoc County. In 1860, John Fenton purchased land on the north side of the forks of the Kawkawin River from David Johnson for $1 per acre (0.50 km²). He built a log cabin and named it Fentonville after his friend and predecessor in this purchase, Elijah Fenton. In 1870, John Wirth founded a small community called Harmony near Milwaukee to serve as a market town for farmers east of Milwaukee who did not have access to local markets or transportation. On November 20th, 1870, by order of Supervisor Edward Saginaw presiding over an election held to determine boundaries for new towns within Dane County, Wirth's community was merged into the larger city of Milwaukee with its own board and administration On December 14th 1907 Manitowoc organized as a township under Act No 108-4 approved by lawmakers at a special session convened to consider amendments proposed by Representative Julius Czaja that would have created more than one township within each county west of Chicago including Manitowoc Township which would have been formed between June 1st 1908 and December 31st 1908 according to Act No 108-4 . The purpose stated for creating additional townships within Dane County had been frustrated because efforts along these lines had failed to gain momentum among legislators during previous sessions; however this time around things appeared different due largely to pressure from lumber interests who could no longer stomach having their raw materials exported unprocessed directly across state lines without any semblance thereof assurances that they would not be exploited or harmed should those exports go through unscathed - something that had become all too familiar since prohibition had taken hold less than two years earlier . Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in Iron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Iron County. Manitowoc was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1854. The name comes from the Ojibwe word for "red earth." Manitowoc was first settled by Loyal Potawatomi Indians who had fled to what is now Wisconsin during the French and Indian War (1763-1768). The town began to grow when white pioneers arrived in 1836, following the creation of Michigan Territory by statehood under President John Adams. White men soon founded other towns along the Fox River system that would become central Illinois and Minnesota. Eventually, many of these towns became Milwaukee counties; Manitowoc became Iron County on December 8, 1856. The Village of Manitowoc was organized on October 25, 1854 with a population of sixty-five people. It grew rapidly due to its location on Red Earth Creek which provided running water and easy access to farmland for settlement. By 1860, it had 992 residents and by 1870 it had reached 2,500 residents. In 1908–09 only 335 people lived in Manitowoc according to the2010 census but this increased over time as more residents moved into town from surrounding villages and townships including Racine (1897), Appleton (1914), Menomonee Falls (1924), Waukesha (1929) and Kenosha (2002). A new shopping center called Town Square opened in 1953 adjacent to what is now Park Place Elementary School which served as neighborhood shopping center until 1996 when Park Place Mall opened adjacent to UW-Milwaukee campus making it one of only two malls west of Milwaukee that did not close after being acquired by Shaw Industries Incorporated (). In 1990s there were plans for a new downtown development called Pearl Street Landing but those plans were never realized because of lack of funds (). In 2000s there were also plans for an upscale high school named Green Bay East High School which would have been located next door to Town Square but those plans too failed due to opposition from nearby businesses ().
