The National Guard of the United States of America was created in 1792 as a militia to protect the country from French and Indian attacks. The first units were raised in Wisconsin and Minnesota. In 1821, the Guard was placed under the command of General Winfield Scott. The Guard saw service in both the Mexican-American War and World War I. In 1935, it was merged with the Army Reserve to form the National Guardsmen of America. The present-day National Guard is made up of over 16 million men and women who serve nationally and internationally. One important part of national guard history is their gift history. Manitowoc is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located within the Manitowoc County seat of Green Bay. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,883. The name "Manitowoc" is derived from Menomonee means "river running through meadow." The first settlers in what is now Manitowoc County were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who arrived in 1763. The first known permanent settler was Nicholas Doerffer, who landed on August 14, 1769 near present-day Manitowoc Rapids and built a log cabin which he called Rheinhausen (meaning "the house by the river"). In 1836, a group of farmers led by John Cushman founded what would become Manitowoc Manufacturing Company. This company manufactured goods such as flour, cheese and lumber until it went bankrupt in 1893. However, because the town's location made it an ideal site for shipbuilding and other manufacturing activities during World War II (the war stimulated growth in this sector), many local businesses continue to operate to this day including Hormel Foods Corporation and Broderick Paper Products Inc.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.5 square miles (134 square kilometers), of which 44square miles (119 square kilometers) is land and 3square miles (8 square kilometers) (1%) is water.[2] The town once had more than 12 thousand residents but today only 7500 people live there making it one of Wisconsin's smallest towns with a population density over 25 people per sq mi

Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. Manitowoc is home to the University of Wisconsin-Wisconsin Rapids and the Manitowoc Shipbuilding and Technology Company. The first European settlers in what is now Manitowoc County were French colonists who arrived during the Seven Years' War in 1763. They founded a small village on the east side of Lake Michigan called La Pointe du Lac. In 1836, when land was offered for sale at Southeastern corner of Washington Street and First Avenue, the name "Manitowoc" was chosen as an allusion to its location on White River (now known as Kankakee River). The town's current spelling, Manitowoc, was approved by a vote on December 12, 1852; it replaced Haysville which had been selected as the new name for rural township No. 2 within county boundaries since those boundaries changed following annexation by Milwaukee County from Van Buren Township in 1851. The first lumberyard opened in 1876 on Main Street near present day Forest Park Boulevard; it became one of America's largest commercial buildings after being rebuilt multiple times throughout its history due to fire outbreaks and other disasters that struck area towns during this time frame In 1902, a dam across Menomonee Falls was completed increasing water availability for agricultural purposes; this made downtown Manitowoc more attractive to residents and led to an increase in business activity In 1956, Waukesha County joined with Milwaukee County to form Marquette County; however, because of population growth within Marquette County (particularly in Racine), Clearwater Township (renamed “Waukesha”) was annexed into Manitowoc upon its incorporation into that county On January 1st 1990, responsibility for public works within Walker Municipal Districts 1-3 transferred from Milwaukee City government to newly constituted Walker Municipal District 4 including part of Mishawaka Township including parts of Manhasset and New Berlin Townships also included within that district . On July 15th 1998 , Clearwater Township (renamed “Waukesha”) voted not to become part of either Walker Municipal District 4 or MarquetteCounty therefore becoming immune from any city services provided thereunder
The town of Manitowoc was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Wiseman. The first settler in the town was Isaac Kapp. In 1851, the village of Manitowoc was organized and began to grow. In 1863, a post office was established in the town and it grew rapidly. By 1889, the population of Manitowoc had grown to over 1,000 people. The towns growth slowed after World War I and during the Great Depression, but it again started to grow during the late 1960s and early 1970s as autos became more popular in Wisconsin. In 1978, Manitowoc voters passed a resolution setting up a city government for the town. The city officially opened its doors on November 2, 1978.
