After contact with Europeans arrived through trade routes along the Mackinac Straits during this time period (around 1492), small villages began forming along these routes as traders transported goods back and forth between Illinois and points further north across Lake Michigan. It is located on the west bank of the Fox River between Milwaukee and Racine. The river forms part of the border between Manitowoc County and Winnebago County. The first settlers in what is now Manitowoc County were French immigrants who arrived in 1763. They founded a trading post on an island near present-day Manitowoc City. In 1834, they organized as a town and named it after their leader, Pierre-à-Gresham Manilwacke. The growth of businesses led to pressed steel production becoming an important factor in the economy by 1940; major manufacturers included American Steel Corporation (ASCO), JCB Company (later John C. Stempel Co.), Bethlehem Steel Corporation (later Allis-Chalmers), National Tube Company (now Nucor Inc.), and Rexall Drugs company. The city began to experience high levels of traffic as people commuting to jobs outside the city increased; residential areas were developed along Wisconsin Avenue and State Street within downtown boundaries while other neighborhoods grew around events such as fairs or sports teams' stadiums.
