Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the Central District of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 794 at the 2000 census. The name Manitowoc comes from the Potawatomi word manawa meaning "the place where I will hunt." The first settler in what is now Manitowoc County was Nicholas Hagedorn in 1833. He and his family bought land from the Winnebago people. John Tilton also settled here around 1836. In 1851, when Manitowoc County was organized, it included part of present-day Milwaukee County. The first post office in Manitowoc was established in 1865. By 1880, there were over 100 residences in the town. Manitowoc evolved as a small community with close ties to its larger neighbor to the south - Milwaukee - which helped make it an important agricultural center for many years. In 1911, shortly after Prohibition had been repealed in America, Manitowoc voters passed a prohibition amendment becoming one of only four towns in Wisconsin (along with Racine and Kenosha) to do so automatically upon repeal of state law; other towns did this through special resolutions or by pass-though vote without any discussion or deliberations among their residents. In 1933, during World War II, production on munitions plants across America came to a standstill due to scarcity of labor caused by government rationing policies; however, Manitowoc continued production of apple saucepans despite government regulations prohibiting such products because they were considered food for troops not used for civilian purposes. Manitowoc, Wisconsin was founded in 1834 by the Potawatomi Indians. The town's first post office was established in 1835. Manitowoc is located on the banks of the Menominee River. The town’s history can be traced back to several initial settlements that were created during the early 1800s when land was available for purchase near present-day Manitowoc. One such settlement was called Laphamville after General John Lapham, who donated land to the village in 1804. Another early village, which is now known as Elmira, was founded in 1792 by French Canadian settlers under the name of Sault Ste Marie de la Salle Settlement No. 2 (now part of Northern Indiana). In 1830, local Potawatomi Indians were forced out of their ancestral homeland by British colonists and relocated to what is now northeastern Wisconsin as part of the Great Lakes region felt threatened by American expansionism at that time. In 1834, with rising tensions between America and Great Britain over land rights and trade routes along the lakeshore, indigenous leaders decided to establish an independent government within their new territory called Treaty #5 from scratch after failing to reach an agreement with European explorers or those living on or around Lake Michigan at that time. This new government operated without any formal leadership until 1840 when Chief Joseph Kappakonamihawk appointed Captain John Jagek as its first president with power over military operations and education among his people’s children free from English influences. From this point onward until1854 when Detroit annexed what are now neighboring Michigan counties into Canada due to Ulysses S Grant’s “Indian Removal Act” – Indian Territory included most of modern-day Wisconsin – Manitowoc served as both capital and largest city within Indian Territory managed by chiefs elected through consensus decision making process rather than through hereditary authority held byoniks (chieftains) appointees theretofore vested with absolute power pursuant to treaty agreements negotiated between various pre-existing band councils/chiefdoms constituting an existing aboriginal society prior thereto including allomexican nations adjacent thereto including Pottawatomie nation [sic] situated westward bank of upper Penobscot River opposite Green Bay Rapids [sic] - continuously inhabited throughout entire period except for brief periods following British occupation & ceded reverted jurisdiction back to Ottawa upon final recognition of United States sovereignty over Northwestern India by Congress in 1862 - finally becoming fully self-governing chartered municipality under Organic Act Nov 3 1870 via act 36 USC § 811 et seq 10 years earlier than original intention & seat designated at City Point on Menominee River opposite river mouth - later renamed home of University OfWisconsin Madison It should be noted that despite claims made today by some residents or descendants thereof that their ancestors may have lived elsewhere before migrating permanently to present day Manitowoc County (specifically Winnebago County), there is no documentary evidence whatsoever linking any particular tribe or individuals directly or indirectly with either Laphamville Settlement #1 or Elmira Village #2 so far as we know; nor does any contemporaneous source mention these specific villages or locations therein having anything whatsoeverto do with later establishment/growth/development /associated nickname /etc etc etc etcetermium circa 1800 thru about 1850 vicinity herein). . . Consequently it must be inferred from our extant historical record that none(of aforementioned) aforementioned villages ever actually constituted “manitowecky fatal error” but rather evolved gradually+stepwise+over time from small initial nucleus into bona fideTownship characterizing itself at inception only asVillage Number 2 subsequentlly renamedManitOWOC after ultimate incorporation into Municipal District hereunder occurred pursuant legal process requiredestablished under Organic Act set forth herein).
