The regiment was mustered into service on January 15, 1862 and served for six months at Fort Snelling before being sent to guard duty in Illinois. On February 13, 1862, the regiment was ordered to Milwaukee and then to Abraham Lincoln’sDouglas Barracks in Springfield, Illinois. There they were engaged in training for a possible deployment to Mississippi. However, on March 4th their unit was called back to Wisconsin when Missouri seceded from the Union and became an Confederate state. The regiment remained stationed at Springfield until April 1865 when it returned home. Manitowoc is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River between Green Bay and Milwaukee. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. The name "Manitowoc" is derived from the Potawatomi word Manawa (meaning place where water does not flow). The first mention of Manitowoc was in 1836 when Nicholas Weiser reported seeing "a small stream that ran through this town." In 1838, Edmund Sibley wrote about "a large body of water on both sides of the river" which he called the Milwaukee River. The first settler in Manitowoc was Samuel Grosvenor who arrived in 1839. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Manitowoc County. The first school in Manitowoc was built on Fourth Street by Dr. John Fisk around 1841-42. A second school opened on State Street near Watertown soon after. In 1846, Chauncey Mifflin discovered oil shale near present day Waukesha and decided to take advantage of it for his business enterprise, Mifflin Oil Company Limited (). After some leasing and drilling activities began, production ceased due to subsidence caused by an underground gas well opening nearby in 1951 (). A post office called Manitowoc was established in 1850, and remained open until 1959; during that time it served as a stop for stagecoaches travelling between Green Bay and Milwaukee en route to Chicago or other points eastward.). In 1870, Isabella Beale founded a convent (the Sisters of Charity) at what is today known as Beale Park within sight of today's town hall building; she also built a convent adjacent to her property which still stands today (). That same year saw the introduction of telephone service with wires reaching all corners of the county (). In 1902–03(), John Ladd helped found the University of Wisconsin−Milwaukee () where he became its first president (); he would remain Atwood's longest serving administrator until his death in 1965(). After weeks' worth of negotiations at UW−Milwaukee's rented facility (), construction finally began onRockwell Hall (), one of America's largest student dormitories (). Completed two years later (), Rockwell Halls became home not just to students but also their families () . On July 15th 1903 (&July 14th Anniversary), Robert Moses unveiled plans for New York City’s World Fair (); work commenced immediately on making Racine available as an overflow site for New York City’s fairgrounds (). As part Of His plan For racial segregation On Broadway Streets In Harlem “ Indian ” men working long hours cleaning streets etc., Moses set up tent camps opposite Madison Square Garden keeping them there from 8 am till 6 pm () until August 27th 1903 when they were moved uptown following Manhattan Bridge completions

Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,378 at the 2010 census. It is located in outlying Racine County on the north shore of Lake Michigan and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Manitowoc was founded in 1836 by fur traders from Canada and named for Mount Wilson, about 20 miles west of town on the Fox River. In 1851, it became a separate county under the name of Racine County and lost its city status in 1955 when Manitowoc became an independent city within Milwaukee County. The old Courthouse still stands downtown and has been used as a museum since 1978. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Manitowoc were French immigrants who arrived from Quebec around 1785-87 aboard ship "L’Africaine". They fished, hunted, gathered natural resources such as corn and potatoes, built log cabins and tanneries, started churches and schools, met with other Canadians near Chicago before finally reaching their destination - what is now Manitowoc - during wintertime on skis or snowshoes over frozen ground. Today's descendants of these early pioneers are known as "the First generation." In 1836, surveyor Hennepin included land adjacent to present-day Manitowoc Township along the Fox River between Appleton Avenue (now Waukesha Avenue) and Slinger Road (now Highway 12). A post office was established at Maniwochie in December 1836 under the name Milton because no one had yet discovered this location by that name; however this appellation may be derived from nearby Menomonee Falls which had been called Minawechie by those Indians after they destroyed all evidence thereof some time earlier.. Inland postmasters serving this area were James Kapp (1837), Isaac Clark (1838), Chauncey Gibbs (1841), Christopher Parkhurst(1843-44), John Fenton(1846-48), George Aiken( 1850-51)and Lewis Pillsbury(1855). Starting with only eight members – four men including surveyor Hennepin –WMATA organized a volunteer fire department No 1 on April 25th 1847 starting with five hose pumper wagons borrowed from neighboring Appleton Township! This department served residents until 1912 when WMATA purchased its own equipment! Volunteer firefighters played an important role then also but eventually replaced by paid firefighters through state government mandates! On October 15th 1860 township trustees voted unanimously to annex unincorporated territory east of Waukesha into township limits; this annexation created quite a bit of controversy as many people living east of Waukesha felt they should have continued to enjoy limited self governance! As it turned out most growth took place west of Waukesha Blvd where new housing developments began appearing gradually throughout Walker & Shaw counties culminating with the construction of Interstate 94 near Green Bay just prior to 2000!! Nowhere did young manitoweckian women feel left out when male professionals flooded into their townships during that time period !!
The town of Manitowoc was organized in 1836 by the Wisconsin General Assembly. The town grew rapidly due to its status as a loggers' and farmers' colony, and it became an important center for the agricultural community in northern Wisconsin. By 1850, the town had a population of 1,500 people. Timber exports from Manitowoc led to rapid growth in thetown during the 1840s and 50s, and by 1860, Manitowoc had a population of 10,000. In 1872, the federal government created what is now Milwaukee County,Wisconsin; Manitowoc lost its status as a separate county but continued to be one of the largest cities in Milwaukee County. In 1954, Manitowoc became part of Racine Township.
