In the Middle East, coffee was consumed as early as 4000 BC. Ethiopians were the first people to grow and roast their own coffee in the 1600s AD. In 1847, George Peabody discovered caffeine in Brazil. He named the drink after his partner and mentor, Sir John Herschel, who had discovered nicotine in Tobacco (a plant). Coffee became popularized all over the world after it was introduced into Switzerland in 1795 by Bernhard Weisse. In 1810, French Captain Francois Joseph Reynaud brought coffee seeds from Arabia to France where he started to cultivate them on Saint-Martin island near Marseille. The first Starbucks opened its doors on May 29th, 1984 in Seattle Washington. It was at this time that Starbucks began selling ground beans instead of whole beans which allowed them to enter into other businesses such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Burger King which served their customers with ground beans until 1978 when they switched over to brewing their own coffee menu using Keurig machines. Coffee has continued to be enjoyed around the world since then and many variations have emerged including Indonesian Kopi Cinar (coffee with cream), Arabic Kafe Fadl al-Qummah (coffee with milk), Colombian Tres Leches (milk chocolate espresso), Kenyan Kikuyu Kaffir Luka (dark roast Arabica bean) and Vietnamese Dong Pho (lightly sweetened condensed milk soy sauce noodle soup).

In 1846 UW-Madison became an autonomous university under the leadership of Driggs Morrill who served as its first chancellor
