The Coast Guard Gift History in Madison, Wisconsin began on December 1, 1922 when the then-Municipal Council passed a resolution authorizing the hiring of a civilian coast guard. The first volunteer coast guard was hired on December 8, 1922. The first paid coast guard was hired on January 2, 1923. Since its inception as a municipal department, the Coast Guard has donated many items and services to local communities in Madison including: $1 million for renovations to the Memorial Auditorium; $5 million for new construction at State Street Naval Reserve Base; and $10 million for improvements to County Highway 524. Today, the Coast Guard provides support to over 3,000 law enforcement officers and rescuers across Wisconsin. Madison, Wisconsin is the capital of the U.S. state of Wisconsin and home to the University of Wisconsin− Madison. The city was founded by Dutch farmers in 1783 as a trading post on the edge of present-day Milwaukee County. The 20th century saw several significant changes to Madison including passage of legislation establishing public education; increasing regulation of transportation; creation of numerous civic organizations such as park systems and libraries; and growth of industry including health care services and automotive manufacturing
