The Little Chute Naval Air Station (LCNAS) was home to the Wisconsin Navy from 1941-1946. LCNAS was a major airbase in the area and operated many types of aircraft including fighters, bombers, and amphibious vehicles. The station also produced Navy ties for over 50 years. In 1942, LCNAS became the first navy base in Wisconsin to deploy an aircraft carrier into service. USS Lexington (CV-2) departed LCNAS on 24 May 1942 as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear, which transported fighter planes and other military equipment across the Atlantic Ocean. The deployment marked a new era for naval aviation in Wisconsin; Lexington would be replaced by USS Enterprise (CV-6) in 1945. In 1943, LCNAS began providing support for Allied operations in Europe; this included aerial refueling operations during World War II and flying supplies to Allied troops fighting on the battlefields of France and Italy. In 1944, LCNAs played a key role inOperation Market Garden as they participated in strategic bombing raids against Nazi concentration camps located within Germany. In 1945, LC NAS moved from Milwaukee to Little Chute; this move symbolized the end of hostilities between America and Japan. At Little Chute Naval Air Station, navy personnel continued their important roles in supporting American Forces throughout World War II and into the Korean War. In 1953-1954, LC NAS operated training missions for newly commissioned officers at Great Lakes Naval Training Center (GLNTC). The Little Chute Naval Base is home to three navies, the United States Navy (USN), the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), and the Chilean navy. The USN has a detachment in Little Chute. This detachment is known as the USS Little Chute Naval Militia Squadron. On July 22, 2017, USS Little Chute (LHD-4) was deployed to participate in Operation Neptune's Spear in Afghanistan. The squadron helped provide security for Coalition military forces and civilians inside of Afghanistan while providing humanitarian relief to those affected by the conflict.

Little Chute is located in the town of Janesville, Wisconsin, about a mile from the small city of Milwaukee. The village was first established in 1847 as a result of the land grant to Amos Kendall from the United States government. It was incorporated as a village in 1865. Little Chute had a population of 581 residents as of 2000. The village is named for the little creek that ran through it. When it was first settled, there were no roads and people traveled by walking or horseback riding. There was also no railroad until 1868 when the Milwaukee & Beloit Railroad came through Janesville and bought land on which to build its line. The Village had an economy based largely on agriculture, with some services being provided such as groceries and banking services. In 1971, Little Chute became part of Janesville when they merged with their neighbor, Park View Township. The merger allowed for more efficient transportation between the two villages since Park View served as both a mall and service area for businesses in Janesville while also providing access to local schools within minutes’ walk from most homes in Little Chute. Today, Little Chute has many diverse programs which support its residents including arts and crafts programming, historical research opportunities (such as attending ghost hunts), wellness initiatives (including healthy eating classes), and public events which include market days, carnivals/festivals, fireworks shows, and holiday celebrations. As one of only 10 communities in Wisconsin designated by Governor Scott Walker to be recipient of “Wisconsin Innovation Award” for excellence in innovation-led economic development projects – Little Chute is proud to have been selected to participate in this program once again this year!
