Little Chute was a small community in the town of Appleton, Wisconsin, United States. The community was founded in 1881 by John and Lillie Cavanaugh. They raised corn, hay, cattle, and chickens. In the 1920s, the Cavanaugh family began to sell ice cream from a truck on their property. The business became successful and they continued to operate it until their death in 1976. In 1984, the community lost its only school when it closed due to budget cuts by the Appleton School District. For many years after that, students from nearby schools attended classes at Mackerel Lake Elementary School while Little Chute High School served as an annex for that district's students. However, in 2011–2012, due to budget cuts by Appleton Township municipalities which are part of the Appleton School District,[1] Little Chute High School reopened as an all-purpose high school again with new classrooms and a more centralized administration building.[2][3]
