Little Chute, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The population was 639 at the 2000 census. Its name comes from a small ravine that runs through the center of town. The first people to live in Little Chute were French Canadians. They started out farming land near what is now known as Subway and other businesses near downtown Green Bay. In 1851, they built a log cabin on the bluffs overlooking the river. From here they could watch the boat traffic coming and going across the river and see game animals migrating upstream. In 1871, James J. Flannery started a grocery store in Little Chute with his brother-in-law John Gorman and their cousin John Hickey. The business grew quickly and by 1880 it had two stores and 100 customers. By 1900, Little Chute had 10 stores and 300 customers who bought goods such as groceries, shoes, clothier items, woodworking supplies, hardware, cigarettes and cigars. Most of these customers came from outside of Green Bay because there was no railroads yet in that area! In 1910Little Chute had its own post office which continued until 1966 when it became part of Green Bay's mail service
In 1873, the first post office in Little Chute was established. The town grew rapidly after this, and by 1907 it had a population of over 100 residents. In 1922, the first school was built in Little Chute. It remained in operation until 1954. In 1957, the town became a part of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and currently has a population of just under 400 residents.
