The history of the Little Chute Army Base began with World War I. The small town of Little Chute, Wisconsin was founded in 1847 by German immigrants. The town was named for a small creek that ran through it. During World War I, the town became a base for the American forces and it housed over 10,000 troops. The base played an important role in the war and helped to win the war against Germany. After the war, the army disbanded Little Chute Army Base and most of its assets were sold off to various businesses and organizations. Today, Little Chute Army Base is home to several different organizations including local police departments, fire services, and military veterans groups. In addition to its historical significance,Little Chute Army Base is also a popular tourist spot due to its proximity to several lakes and attractions such as Mount Rushmore National Monument and Valley of Rocks National Park.

In 1879, the United States Army purchased land in Little Chute, Wisconsin. The first barracks were built on the property in 1881. The army barracks served as a training ground for soldiers until 1919, when they were replaced by a new military base. The Little Chute Soldier's Memorial Museum was opened in 1984 to honor the members of the United States Army who have served in Little Chute.
Little Chute is a small town in the far southeastern corner of Wisconsin, located about 26 miles (41 km) northeast of Milwaukee. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. The community was named for the Little Chute River, which flows through it and forms part of the border between Milwaukee County and Racine County. It began as a small farming village in 1875, and by 1925 had grown to include a smithy, two stores, a post office, a livery stable and several homes. The community experienced growth again during World War II when residents helped build airfields in nearby Menomonee Falls and Racine. In 1951 Little Chute became an incorporated town under the name of Chute City. In 1990 Little Chute received its own ZIP code; 73206. As more people moved into the area over time they started to create their own businesses—a bakery, hair salon, pet store—and by 2003 there were twelve businesses with permanent addresses in Little Chute. Since then little has changed; businesses remain open late on Fridays and Saturdays for customers who can't visit during regular business hours; citizens continue to help run local government; and public events are still held throughout the year such that residents can get involved directly or watch from their homes.

In 1947, the Military Academy at West Point was founded as an all-male institution, and the Army became a separate service within the Department of Defense on July 1, 1949. Little Chute is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Appleton, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 6,883 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Appleton–Mequatuck–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Little Chute were French traders and missionaries in 1763 who named it "Chute du Lac" because of its small size and rapid Streams running through it. In 1836, the Town of Appleton incorporated as a village under the name of "Erie". The name "Little Chute" was given to it by General Dodge while he was visiting Little Chute on his way from Green Bay to Milwaukee in 1847. The town site was platted in 1854 by James Fenton and others and built quickly due to demand for land around the new railroad station which would later become known as the Village Green Shopping Center. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in Little Chute with a population of 2,500 people. The village slowly lost its popularity until World War II when industry began booming and production moved out of town for fear that war would send prices skyrocketing and damage infrastructure. When factories closed down during World War II, Little Chute became an agricultural community with many small farms remaining until after the war when more large companies came into town looking for cheap labor. Businesses have since returned with larger sizes but remain tightly clustered around the shopping center which has grown increasingly competitive over time despite having few services outside its borders including water supply or public transportation. In 1990, most residents left their villages behind when they voted to incorporate into Appleton as a separate municipality without giving up their village status or rights to use their names or villages within Appleton limits like Little Chutte did before them. Today, most residents live near either Interstate 90 or I-94 making it easy for them to get around without leaving their locality but they retain some degree of autonomy within Appleton both politically and economically which has helped keep much of their culture alive even as other parts have experienced gentrification and displacement during recent decades.
In 1851, a group of men led by Captain James Hall founded the town of Little Chute on the east bank of the Milwaukee River. The town quickly grew and in 1857, it was incorporated as a city. Little Chute became an important manufacturing center during the early 20th century and remained so into the 21st century. In 1951, Little Chute was renamed Hawkeye City after its first mayor, Harry W. Hawkeye.
