The Navy has been present in La Crosse, Wisconsin since the early 1800s. The earliest reference to the navy can be found in a 1747 deed from Captain John Meigs of the French ship La Caravelle and his wife Marie de la Riviere. They sold land in what is now downtown La Crosse for £500 to the British Navy for use as a naval base. In 1814, HMS Cerberus was launched from La Crosse Harbor and served as part of Commodore David Dixon's squadron against Napoleon Bonaparte's forces in Europe. In 1835, USS Constitution was launched from the harbor and served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. On December 15, 1941, USS Enterprise was launched from Naval Base Pier 2 at La Crosse after being brought there by way of barge. Shelled by Japanese planes while escorting convoy HX-111 on November 7th, she survived and returned to service in 1944 as flagship of Vice Admiral Raymond A. McCormick's Task Force 8 (TF 8) which engaged Japanese forces off Leyte Gulf. On February 14th 1945 she screened Rear Admiral Chester W. Nimitz' carriers as they sailed into Leyte Gulf to take part in Operation Overlord which led to Japan's unconditional surrender

La Crosse, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 28,869 at the 2010 census. La Crosse was founded in 1839 as a sawmill town by immigrant Germans and their families. The city annexed portions of La Crosse in 1959, creating its current boundaries. La Crosse is the largest city in Racine County and the fifth-largest municipality inWisconsin after Milwaukee, Green Bay, Waukesha, and Racine. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Crosse were German fishermen from Kiel who sailed up the Fox River on vessels called "Dresden" and "Wetzlar". In 1839 they discovered a fertile valley that would become home to their milltown - then known as "Grimmstadt". When Nicholas Dibble purchased land east of the river for $4 per acre (this included 3/4 of present day downtown La Crosse), he named his new village “Dibble” after himself and his father-in-law John Dibble (a pioneer). In 1846, when Anthony De Grandpre explored this area for fur traders, he found only rolling hills with no water sources nearby; however, he determined that there must be a water source because nearby Mennonite villages had beenrequesting permission to build creeks into their properties. De Grandpre returned to Holland before winter could freeze over road construction began which would have cut off access to those villages so it appears that de Grandpre realized early on that there must be an outlet for this valuable resource if Milwaukee wanted to keep up with other fur ports around Lake Superior. It wasn't until 1847 when Colonel John Crampton discovered two small lakes near what is now la Crossee while surveying land grants given him by Ottawa territorial Governor Sir George Simpson that development really picked up steam here; Cramptonleased land east of where many mills were situated including one belonging to Captain James Guthrie built at what is now known as First National Bank Building on Main Street west of Center Street today – this location allowed easy access by wagonloads of goods necessary for manufacturing during LOGAN WAR FURTHERMORE THIS LOCATION IS ALSO WHERE THE FIRST ELECTRICITY SYSTEM WAS BUILT IN LA CROSSE
