The first guns in La Crosse were pistols made by Nicholas-Jacques Lefebvre. He built a gunsmith shop on the corner of State and Washington Streets in 1792. The shops’ customers were the local farmers, who would buy pistols to protect their crops from Indians. In 1837, John P. Brown started making firearms in La Crosse. His firearms were used to suppress Native American resistance against white settlers during the Dakota War of 1876. In 1865, Wm Halsey began manufacturing rifles in La Crosse. His rifles were used in the Civil War and World War I. In 1929, Eberhard Jäckel founded Jäckel & Sons Guns stores in La Crosse and neighboring Council Bluffs. Jäckel was a pioneer in handgun manufacture and sales outside of Europe. From 1927 until his death in 1961, he was president of International Federation of Gunmakers (IFG). Jickel's store is now known as the John P. Brown Museum of Firearms History at Wisconsin State University where it houses over 100 guns from across different eras
