In 1872, Mr. Klettenberg moved his business to Third Street and started selling coffee direct from the beans himself. In 1926, the first co-op west of the Mississippi was founded in La Crosse by Dutch farmers who grew coffee for their markets in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. At present, there are more than twenty-five coffee shops located in La Crosse with over two hundred different types of roasted beans available for purchase. The city has also become home to several roasting cooperatives which offer unique coffees from around the world at lower prices than retail competitors. The first espresso machine was created in 1876 by Luigi Beccaria, who named it La Scala after the Milan Cathedral where he had developed it. At its peak, espresso machines made up 50% of all sales in Italy. In 1912, Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi designed and patented the wireless transmission of audio signals using radio waves. This led to the development of radios which could be used to purchase coffee from cafes and purchase other items too. Since its inception, coffee has undergone a number of changes – including becoming more refined and complex over time (resulting in an increase in world-wide production). There is no one definitive account of the beginnings of Gourmet Coffee. However, it is generally accepted that a man by the name of John Bryant founded the business in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1949. Bryant was an experienced coffee roaster and retailer who decided to sell his beans direct to consumers. Bryant's first shop sold coffee beans from a small-scale roastery he located on Brown Street in La Crosse. The company grew quickly and within two years had opened its second store, also located on Brown Street. By 1957, Gourmet Coffee had outgrown its original space and moved into a larger building at 181 State Street in La Crosse. The company continued to grow rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s; by 1966, Gourmet Coffee had become one of the leading producers and retailers of gourmet coffee worldwide. During this time, Bryant also became involved with various philanthropic endeavors including establishing the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Massachusetts and giving away more than $1 million worth of coffee beans through his foundation throughout his life. Gourmet Coffee enjoyed some significant growth during the 1970s as well; by 1976, they had opened their third store - this time located in Chicago - making them one of the largest retail providers of gourmet coffee in North America at that point. Additionally, Bryant passed away in 1978 but his legacy continues to be felt through Gourmet Coffee's many philanthropic endeavors which have helped support local communities around the world

La Crosse, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of La Crosse County. The population was 753 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in La Crosse County. It is located on the Fox River between Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien and is bordered by Green Bay to the north, Racine to the east, Kenosha to the south, and Oshkosh to the west. The first European settlement in what would become La Crosse County was made in 1836 by two Frenchmen: Antoine Demers and Jacques Lemaire. They named their town after Louis-Jacques Lafontaine, a French noble who had settled in land that later became Wisconessettshire County. Lafontaine's wife had married an American, Lucy Stone; her descendants founded what would become Waukesha County (now Milwaukee). Wisconsin's second capital was Madison from 1848 until 1851 when Washington City became official capital under President James K. Polk due to overcrowding at Washington Capitol Building near downtown Chicago. In 1854–55, La Crosse was chosen as temporary capital because of lack of available space at Madison proper on South Bank Street and because of its location on or near three major rivers—the Fox River, Menomonee Falls River, and Wabash River—making it potential transportation hub for growth in northwestern Wisconsinurdue (later Northwestern Illinois). In 1861 during America's Civil War as part of efforts to protect Fort Snelling from Confederate attack there were several skirmishes around La Crosse involving both Union forces led by General John M. Carpenter and Confederate General John Buford; however no battle took place within town limits although damage done ensued including a destroyed store which may have been one reason for Democratic Congressman Abraham Lincoln choosing not to visit La Crosse that day while Indianapolis held another important event nearby celebrating emancipation proclamation issued there from President Lincoln’s own handpicked attorney general Gideon Welles weeks earlier; alluding also back then Garrison Keillor’s memorable phrase “La Crossee isn’t so bad after all” now better known as simply “Keillor Place” today with numerous residential neighborhoods built upon its former site since then including some bordering onto present day Garrison Keillor Park on North Avenue just east of I-94/I-280 interchange across from Ford dealership where he once worked before moving his operations into his current home here some 40 years ago! On July 2nd 1870 Lyman Trumbull organized a group called "Emmons Purchase" milliners' strike against low pay &icknowshops conditions prevailing then thruout much US industry only 3 miles NWNW Minneapolis) this triggered first wave of strikes throughout US overpriced clothes being exported through Suez Canal .
