In 1924, the Army Post Office moved from its original location on Main Street to what is now Veterans Affairs Building on Park Avenue. Throughout World Wars II and III, La Crosse saw significant growth in its role as a center for army gifting. In 1961, when Fort Norman was decommissioned and turned into an officer housing barracks, local citizens donated many boxes of postcards, hats and other items that constitute one of Army's most famous donation drives ever occurred. French traders discovered this region in 1642 when they sailed upriver from Quebec City on their way to find new land to sell to Native Americans. Jesuit missionaries also explored this part of North America during this time period and built trading posts along what is now Wausau River before sailing back downriver to Superior on October 11, 1683; they had been sent by France to trade fur with Native American nations east of Lake Superior. In 1755–57 French troops under Marquis de Montcalm captured Fort Niagara on Ontario’s eastern shore after a three month siege that ended with a treaty negotiated by Pierre Charles Lescarbot which guaranteed future Indian access to Canadian territory east of Detroit Lakes through purchase from the Ottawas at their fort at Michilimackinac Rapids. In 1763 Governor David Barron ordered Major George Chessoner “to lay waste these parts” because English traders were growing rich off fur trading operations in present day Canada East; however only 1/3rd or so of what was then called Illinois Territory had yet been claimed when Chessoner laid claim to all but 18 square miles northward thereof on July 4th resulting in his being court martialed for unauthorized possession by an officer without orders! On October 5th tavern keeper John Butler took notice that five men wearing green coats appeared at his establishment opposite State House Square intent upon watering horses belonging to Captain Jonathan Williams commanding forces stationed thereabouts; soon thereafter armed militiamen enteredthe buildingarmed with pistols while bottles filled with water were distributed among listeners! It was not long until members of both housesof the legislature learned about this unusual event taking place within their own Capitol buildings!
