La Crosse, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat for La Crosse County. The population was 61,611 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Green Bay, Wis., after Green Bay itself. The name "Crosse" comes from one of two French settlements in this area (the other being Racine). In 1837, Isaac Brockman purchased land east of present-day La Crosse and founded Brockman City on this land. La Crosse was platted as a town on November 3, 1854 by A.P. Hiller and Wm Hennepin; it became an incorporated city on May 20, 1903 under charter from the State of Wisconsin.[1] The Milwaukee Road came to La Crosse in 1855; it first ran through what is now downtown La Crosse before going through Birchland Township to Cross Plains Railroad Company Station which was located near today's intersection of I-94 and US 12/24th Street NW (now Bremen Boulevard). The first trainloads of goods arrived here on December 5, 1855 from Milwaukee via Racine[2]. On February 14, 1870,[3] the first boatload of passengers reached La Crosse when the steamer Niagara arrived at Cross Plains pier with coal from Chicago.[4] It took over six weeks for that ship to reach its destinations due to bad weather conditions along the Great Lakes coastline! In 1888–89 local businesswoman Harriot Gilmore built a large brick building at 216 Main Street which served as both her home until her death in 1990 and also housed many community organizations including United Way [5], Catholic Charities [6], Lutheran Social Services [7], Friends Meeting House [8], American Red Cross #5 [9] In 1916 Captain John J. Musselwhite purchased 6 acres (2 ha) northwest of downtown La Crosse for $600[10]; he named it Musselwhite Park after his father General James Musselwhite who had commanded Union forces during the Civil War. This property would become home to what is now Stroud Field Museum where local history classes are given each semester since 1997! The USAAF was founded on December 15, 1916 as an arm of the military government that oversaw all air activities. From its early days, the USAF had a tradition of giving Gifts to its members in order to show appreciation for their service. One such tradition began in 1951 when then-Commander-in-Chief Curtis LeMay presented General James Doolittle with a Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft as a token of his appreciation for leading America into victory over Japan during World War II.
