In 1892, John W. Dempster opened the first Kenosha coffee house. The coffee house was located on North First Street in Kenosha. In 1912, the Dempster Coffee Company was founded by John and his brother-in-law, Harry L. Hammett. The company operated out of a two-story brick building on Second Street in Kenosha. In 1916, the Dempsters added a second floor to their building and named it the Hampden Coffee House after their father-in-law, Harry Laughlin Hampden. The Hampden Coffee House served as the business headquarters for the dempster coffee companies until they merged with another Kenosha business in 1954 to form the present day Hamptons Coffee Company Incorporated. The Hamptons Coffee House is still in operation and is currently owned and operated by Harry Laughlin Hampden Jr., who also serves as its President and CEO
Kenosha, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Kenosha County. The population was 21,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The site of what is now Kenosha was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians in 1836-1837 and then by Menominee Indians from east of Lake Michigan in 1847-1848. It became a town on October 1, 1856, when it was split off from Racine Township. The name "Kenosha" originated with John Kenneth O'Neill who came to this country as an American Fur trader in 1823 and found land along the Fox River which he named "Milwaukee". He sold his interest in this property to James White for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $ ). White built a gristmill here which began operation on April 11, 1865. Winnipeg businessman George Stephenson purchased about 800 acres (300 hectares) north of town for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ ) in 1870 and donated it to the town limits as well as two lots adjoining his home which formed what would become North Park Blocks #1-3 on Superior Avenue near Wabash Street. Stephenson also donated land east of Wabash Street between State Road 550 (now I-94) and Superior Avenue for a new courthouse, schoolhouse, Masonic Lodge No. 5 ("Cook's Block"), post office and other public buildings; these properties are now known collectively as Northwestern University Parklands adjacent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital & Northwestern University School Of Medicine). In addition, Stephenson gave money towards construction of churches: First Congregational Church at Superior Avenue & State Road 550; Second Congregational Church at Neshoba Boulevard & Wabash Street; St Alban's Episcopal Church at Saginaw Road & Western Avenue - these buildings were completed in 1888 and 1889 respectively. In 1890–91 Stephenson donated another 400 acres or so northwest of downtown called "North Park" blocks #4-6 comprising many contributing residences dating back to beforeWisconsin Rapids became an incorporated municipality on December 15, 1850 (). North Park was annexed by Kenosha on January 3rd 1906 following its incorporation into Milwaukee County under Article VII Section 4(a) of the Milwaukee Municipal Code (). On April 6th 1913 North Park Blocks #7-9 were added to Kenosha when their block numbers were changed from 8th Ward through 10th Ward courtesy mail from Mayor John J Quarles following complaints from citizens there about lack thereof due to continuous annexation process that started without their consent? On September 7th 1916 City Council amended ordinances creating Streets Department having jurisdiction over all streets within city limits including those including side streets not included herein within said limits nor within boundaries prescribed by law . Streets Department Director John A Aronson directed Selectmen E F Giannini and Arthur Cronin thereto effecting changes therein relative to alleyways etc., alleys being numbered starting with one nearest street boundary...The Selectmen transmitted their findings agreeable thereto back unto Mayor Quarles who ordered them published pro tempore...This latest amendment ordinance provided for continued annexation proceedings begun without prior notification (& vote), but no longer subject thereto revocation or suspension.. Subsequent amendments made during World War I deleted most entries except those related alley numbering etc., while still providing same right/duty/responsibility vs city officials etc." On November 25th 1924 Temporary Order No 2 was issued pursuant to Act 128 deeding 9% interest (~$640) piecemeal in lots located at 820 Greenwood Ave NE corner lot 506 Cedar Ave NW . Lot 66 Easement Agreement dated March 12 1924 between owner Harry Westervelt et al shows ownership residing with Mrs Helen Westervelt until her death 1922." After years spent annexing more municipalities than anyone else alive or dead (), KenosHA finally had its own government!
