Kenosha, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Kenosha County. The population was 43,815 at the 2010 census. The city is located on Milwaukee's north side and is part of theMilwaukee metropolitan area. It has been home to some of the country's earliest settlements, including one by French missionaries in 1763. The first permanent settler in what is now Kenosha County was Levi LeCompte, who founded a trading post there in 1836 with his brother-in-law, Pierre Chouteau. Other early settlers included John Smeaton and Nicholas Jorgensen Sr., both from Denmark; George Washington Carver; and Isaac Dunham, who had arrived in 1837 from Vermont. In 1854, when Milwaukee was incorporated as a city, Kenosha became its first municipal center. In 1870 it annexed all of Racine Township east of Market Street to become its fourth municipality; this annexation created Racine–Kenosha which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Milwaukee County (though it does not have any local government services). During World War II, many Kenosha residents served in military units stationed throughout the war zones; among them were Sergeant Alvin York and Corporal Jeffery Epperson—the only civilians ever prosecuted for combat during World War II out of all Americans arrested or tried under United States law
