Coast guard gift history in Kenosha, Wisconsin started in the early 1900s when a group of men and women from the Kenosha Volunteer Fire Department pooled their money to purchase a small boat. The boat was used to transport goods between local businesses and the port of Milwaukee. In 1916, the first coast guard station was built on State Street in Kenosha. The fire department donated land for the station and construction began. The first captain of the Coast Guard Station was Wm. Fergusson who served from 1916-1920. From 1921-1924, Captains John Hickey and Jens Nielsen served as Captain’s Assistant; however, Nielsen resigned due to health problems in 1924. In 1927, Lt. Robert Lunsford became Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station Kenosha; he would serve until his retirement in 1970. In 1978, an addition was added to the station which housed a kitchen and living quarters for officers and their families; this addition is still standing today. In 1984, an additional store room was added which also housing a kitchenette and living quarters for officers and their families; this addition is no longer standing today but is open to visitors during limited hours each day that it is not being used for storage purposes (see photo). During World War II, Coast Guard StationKenosHA conducted numerous searches along Lake Michigan shoreline including Big Bayou (near present day Racine), Eagle Bayou (near present day Green Bay), Sturgeon Bay (northwest corner of Milwaukee County), Whitefish Point(southwest corner of Milwaukee County) as well as several smaller bayous including: SturgeonBay “Middle Harbor” located at 4 miles northwest ofKenosha on Manitowoc Peninsula adjacent to Menomonee Falls National Wildlife Refuge In 1969-1970 command changed hands multiple times with Captains James Fenton serving from 1971-1973 then Captains Ronald McFarlane 1973-1976 then Captains George Sisk 1976-1978 before retiring in 1980 On July 1st 1981 Commander Clifford Snyder assumed command over all three stations while stationed at Mackinac Island Naval Air Station after previous commanders Rear Admiral David Hebert retired The lastCaptain under Commodore Snyder's command Lieutenant Don Doherty relieved him on September 15th 1981 . Finally effective October 1st 1981 Commander Snyder handed over operations back to Naval Air Station Mackinac Island Commandant Al Bielefeldt who continued operation until January 1985 when all three stations were returned backto ashore custody with Commander Clifford Snyder assuming command again
