Kenosha, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 20,876 at the 2010 census, and it is the largest town in Milwaukee County. It is located on the Kenosha River in southeastern Milwaukee County. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Kenosha were Germans who arrived from Jena, Germany in 1816. They named their community "Hegewisch" after their farmhouse near Hegewisch am Rhein which they bought from the indigenous people for $1 per acre (0.50 kg/acre). The name stuck and today's town was platted in 1837 by John Nicholson as part of a land grant to Isaac Brockman. The name came about because many of the early pioneers had to cross over the river on small boats calledKENOSHA or KENOSHASSEE because there was no bridge over it then and until 1853 all traffic went downriver rather than up as today's roads do. The first school district was organized in 1838 and by 1840 most of present-day Kenosha had been built including what is now downtown and much of what is today Waukesha Countyline (later Racine County). In 1865, when industrialists James Fenton and George Stephenson built a new mill just east of downtown on National Avenue (now First Street), they also founded the citys first newspaper, The Journal Sentinel. That same year, Kenosha also became one of four townships within Milwaukee County that were created to house farms newly developed south of Lake Michigan following annexation by Milwaukee from Chicago into countyhood under President Abraham Lincoln during his Dole Administration (). Kenosha is a town in Wisconsin, United States. It was founded in 1854 by German settlers, who named it for the nearby Kenosha River. The population was 5,412 at the 2010 census. The town is the county seat of Waukesha County. The first settler in what is now Kenosha was Wilhelm Kappeler, who arrived in 1851 and started to build a log cabin on the current site of the courthouse. In 1855, Kappeler's son Hermann moved from Germany to join him and built a gristmill on an outlet stream near present day downtown. A post office was established in this location in 1857, and later renamed Kenosha after its founder. In 1860, Friedrich Laubach erected a sawmill on the north side of the river where today's State Capitol stands. By 1865, three other mills had been added to Laubach's business: John Hagee’s mill on Whiteside Creek (now Waukesha), George Heckel’s mill on Big Creek (now Milwaukee) and Jacob Hofmeier’s mill on Lake Michigan (now Racine). This new industry brought much wealth to Kenosha over time and helped spur growth throughout the town. By 1870, there were 11 businesses operating within KenosHA limits; this number only grew as daytime trade expanded into new areas such as Milwaukee and Chicago during the late 19th century. After years of growth and progressivism under municipal president Fredrick Werrey – one of America's most leading progressives –WFisher-Hall Paper Co., which had opened up shop just north of downtown several years earlier – became majority owner of all but two outposts within town limits by 1898 when they purchased land comprising parts of both sides of Main Street between Clinton Avenue eastward until that point including South High Street westward from Market Street; Fisher-Hall retained ownership interests therein until their bankruptcy some 25 years later due largely to organized labor pressure from local unions seeking increased benefits for employees through collective bargaining rights without regard to race or sex among other issues ALONE! A prominent member of American author Gertrude Stein's family died suddenly while living inKenosHA during 1915; her husband Frank Lloyd Wright wrote her an eulogy expressing his sorrow at her death resulting "from rupture [of] an ovarian cyst" at age 88 following more than 50 years consecutively having never married women beyond short pregnancies/fertility treatments interspersed with numerous rounds[sic] operations…. At her funeral service held 10 days later amidst great public interest many people turned out not only because Mrs Stein had been associated closely with many famous people but also because she enjoyed considerable respectability both inside RWJF [the University Of Wisconsin–Madison] as well as outside thereof despite tendencies culminating about 2 decades previously with Alice Paul activities….. Mrs Stein had long been considered nationally significant even before her visit given then recent advances made concerning contraception methods however no formal memorial has ever been created…."
