The Kaukauna Coast Guard Station was established in 1934 as a result of the merger of two predecessor coast guard detachments. The original detachment, which was located at Wausau, Wisconsin, served as the primary coastal guard for the entire state of Wisconsin. In 1935, the detachment was relocated to Kaukauna and became part of the newly created Kaukauna Coast Guard District. The station continued to serve as a primary coast guard facility for the entirety of Kaukauna County until 1972 when it was transferred to Dane County. In 1984, the Kaukauna Coast Guard Station was closed due to budget cuts and its functions were turned over to other shoreside agencies within the county. However, since its closure it has been reopened multiple times and is currently used by both local law enforcement agencies and state troopers.
Kaukauna is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. The most populous city in Kaukauna is West Allis. The first post office in Kaukauna was established on November 21, 1854. It was renamed "Kaukauna" on December 3, 1884. On February 14, 1914, it merged with the neighboring town of Wanhaka to form the new town of Kaukauna-Wanhaka. On January 1, 1922 the towns of Wanhaka and Kaukauna were combined again to form the new village of Kaukauna-Wanhaka. The Village of Kaukauna had its start on October 15, 1916 when it wasorganized as a result of a merger between two other villages- Mukwonago and Winona Lake. The merger resulted in the establishment of an all women's business club which functioned as an early proto-bank and also served as an educational center for local children while their mothers did some work outside the home (a rarity at that time). On July 20th 1946 voters approved a resolution to change the name from "Kaukauna" to "West Allis". In 1953 they reverted back to their original name after being forced by court order to change it due to racist comments made about white people by then Mayor Harry Janssen Sr..

Kaukauna was founded in 1852 by Peter Kaukauna and his wife, Nellie. The Kaukauna Post Office was established in 1854. The town began to grow quickly after the discovery of oiligs in 1863, which led to increased business and population growth. In 1865, Kaukauna incorporated as a village. The first postmaster, Wm. Fenton, served the community for many years before retiring in 1904. By 1907, Kaukauna had a population of 1,500 residents and it continued to grow until 1939 when it had only 500 residents remaining. With the decline of oil production and other economic factors that affected much of Wisconsin during the 1930s, Kaukauna's population fell to just 100 residents by 1940. During World War II, Kaukauna made significant contributions to the war effort through its participation in the National Defense League (NDL). In 1945-1946, Haugen County helped with munitions production at Alcoa Consolidated's carbon black plant on River Road north of town. This event is commemorated by a plaque located at Alcoa’s plant entrance which reads: "In memory of all who participated in this important military undertaking - civilians as well as soldiers - we THANK GOD." The postwar period saw increasing demand for housing and services within town limits while also seeing an increase in traffic following highway construction throughout Wisconsin during that time period which created infrastructure problems within Kaufmanaunee Village specifically along Highways 2 and 3 (later known as I-94). Additionally, continuing high levels of unemployment among Kaufmanaunee villagers caused tension between future generations over access to resources such as water or land necessary for businesses within town limits while also straining social ties between family members living near one another during this time period. Ultimately though, these issues were resolved through negotiation and compromise rather than open conflict which has resulted in a more peaceful community today where everyone enjoys close relationships with one another despite occasional differences or disagreements about what should be done or how things should be conducted
