Janesville is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, and the county seat of Janesville County. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northern half of Milwaukee County and is bordered by Waukesha to the north, Racine to the east, Appleton to the south, and Kenosha to the west. The city's nickname "The City on a Hill" comes from its location atop a small hill that overlooks downtown Janesville and all of Milwaukee County. The first Europeans to reach what is now Janesville were fur traders traveling through what is now Wisconsin in 1779-1780. They named their new settlement Fort Niagara after King George III of England's Warship HMS Niagara which had been sunk off Canada's shore near present-day Superior, Michigan on July 10, 1779 during his attempt to subdue American Indians who were then living near Lake Superior. In 1837, when Janesville was incorporated as a village it had a population of 228 people; however its population grew rapidly due to land speculation and lumbering activity led by Isaac Maynard who donated 20 acres (8 ha) for $1 in 1838 along with an sawmill on Menomonee River where he built his home today known as Maynard House. This led to rapid growth in both trade and industry around town with construction continuing until 1852 when railroads arrived which ended much development because transportation became more important than production for most businesses at that time. A large brick courthouse was constructed in 1850 which served as both court house and government buildings for many years until it burned down in 1906 following an accidental fire inside while being used as a schoolhouse; this event made Janville one of only two cities without a municipal building between Green Bay and Chicago at that time During World War II there was significant manufacturing activity taking place here including aircraft parts production at General Electric's facility adjacent to Cedar Point amusement park before later moving into shipbuilding operations at Navistar shipyards close by .
