The Janesville Naval Shipyard was founded in 1908 by Captain John H. Marston as the Milwaukee Naval Shipbuilding Corporation. The shipyards became a part of the United States Navy in 1913 and were renamed the Naval Shipyard at Janesville after Rear Admiral George W. Jellison, Commander-in-Chief, First Fleet. The shipyards produced over 200 ships during World War II and 1,500 more during the Korean War. In 1970, the shipyards were closed due to budget cuts within the military and they were sold to Freeport McMoRan Incorporated for $5 million. They remain inactive today but are property of Freeport McMoRan Incorporated. During World War II, the Janesville Naval Shipyard produced USS Pascagoula (AO-7), USS Salerno (CG-4), USS Forrestal (CVN-78), USS Wasp (AVS-9) and USS Enterprise (CVN-65). These warships served in both Pacific Theater of Operations and European Theater of Operations before being returned home to US naval forces in 1945. In Korea, Janesville production contributed vessels such as USS Pueblo (AGS-3) and USS Hurlbut (DDG-68). The shipyards also built destroyers such as HMCS Drummondville and CSS Chesapeake Bay which participated in Operation Market Garden against Nazi Germany on 12 May 1944 while Janesville was producing destroyer escorts DDG 104/HHH 94/DDR 684/. After world war II ended, manyJanesville sailors received discharge or honorable discharges because their vessels had not been ordered into service again following hostilities; this included Sailors Marvin Swayne Jr., James Folsom Jr., Donald Moseley Sr., Clifford Wexler III, Glen Erikson Jr., Edwin Ladd III, Loren Barnes III’s father Clarence who received his honorable discharge from carrier picket duty at Yokosuka Japan on 24 Aug 1946 after 7 years with USMC aboard aircraft carriers}; these sailors would later join other navy veteransgroups like Vietnam Veterans Against Nuclear Weapons or Sailor's Pride organizations that lobbied for naval vessel rebuilds through memberships dues money collected from individual sailors . The economy has changed significantly over the years with two major downturns followed by several years of growth followed by another downturn which has impacted many aspects of the community including jobs production and wages especially since 2008 when global economic conditions took a dive causing numerous layoffs across different industries throughout much of North America impacting communities large or small including but not limited to those located near Chicago however few have reported negative impacts on local businesses adjacent to their neighborhoods within walking distance

The first school was built in 1841 and the first post office was established in 1845. In 1861, Janesville became part of the newly formed Wisconsin Territory and then the United States of America. The population of Janesville grew steadily from its early years until it reached its peak during World War I when it numbered over 100,000 people. After the war, the population declined as many farmers left to find new opportunities elsewhere. The town slowly lost its importance and fell into obscurity until it regained some popularity during the 1960s when it became home to a high school, a college, and an NFL team.
