Janesville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Janesville-Racine metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,752. The name Janesville comes from Dutch missionary Hendrik Janse van Rensselaer and his wife Anna Maria Schuyler who came to this area in 1779. The first post office at Janesville was established in 1837. The city of Janesville was founded on February 15, 1852 by settlers John Ladd and James Sibley with help from the government of Canada. It grew rapidly due to its location at a crossingroads for wagon traffic between Chicago and Milwaukee County and its nearness to Illinois land grants made it an attractive spot for businesses and entrepreneurs. In 1865, the first store opened in what is now downtown Janesville; it became a principal commercial center until nearby Waukegan took over as the city's main commercial center during the 20th century. In 1915, when WI Rapids Bridge was completed through town, many people relocated to join newly created Racine County because of its virgin forestland tracts that offered excellent timber prospects not found elsewhere inWI. The first settlers in what is now Janesville were German immigrants who arrived in 1836 from Germany via their ship "Walde" on Lake Michigan. In 1847, a post office called "Janesville" was established in honor of General Josiah Jealous Willard (1795-1868), a hero of American Revolutionary War who had served as an aide to General David Wilkinson during the Battle of Bunker Hill and as military governor at Fort Dearborn near Chicago).
