Janesville is a town in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 34,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Janesville County. The name of the town may be derived from John Jacob Astor's 1785 purchase of 1,200 acres (500 ha) of land in present-day Janesville for $5 per acre ($1 = $5). The first European settler in what is now Janesville was Nicholas Jorgensen who arrived in 1769 and built a log cabin on the site where he currently lives. He named his settlement New Sweden after his homeland Sweden. Swedish settlers also founded West Allis and Racine before moving to what is now Janesville in 1834 when they acquired 640 acres (250 ha) east of Green Bay for £10 per head paid by Danish immigrants. In 1836, the Indian uprising known as Black Hawk War began and lasting two weeks destroyed most of eastern Green Bay; including much of what is now Janesville. In response to this devastation, Governor Isaac Noble issued a decree giving all citizens free passage to any new place within their borders without payment of taxes for three years or more. This policy became known as open door policy because anyone could move into any new place at any time without fear of being taxed again. A group led by Majerus Prentice set out from Milwaukee on October 16, 1840 to cross Lake Michigan at Asuncion and march northwest until they reached Prairie du Chien which they burned on November 3rd anniversary along with all other settlements west of Iowa River except Chicago who had already moved westward under the auspices of General Harrison’s America First Expedition under Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Jennings and Captain Alexander McKay about four months earlier when many northern Indiana farmers deserted their struggling British subjects during the Great Lakes Rebellion that began on September 12th season near Fort Dearborn Heights MI etc etc etc). Consequently there were no permanent American settlements west of Iowa River until after General Dodge’s Expedition overland across Canada failed with LtCol John Mapes Commanding 4 companies [of infantry], Col George Armstrong Custer commanding 2 Companies [of cavalry] contributing largely to Gen Dodge’s victory at Battle Of Little Bighorn over thousand Sioux Indians August 25 – 29 1876 upon reaching Pierre NE then continuing down North Dakota Territory through Nemacoma ND etc etc). At least one hundred people died traveling nonstop across great distances during those days including some “the hard way” such as Capt James Wolkentin who lost an arm wrestling match with Chief Sitting Bull near Devils Tower NU on July 8th 1876 prior to that day’s famous 50 mile march from Agency POINT TO Agency POINT draining Lake Winnipeg en route only stopping every few miles for water supplies etc). After reaching Manitoba province we continued our journey downriver past today’s Regina SK into NW Territories today Saskatchewan on July 27th 1850.) Today's Janesville was laid out according to its current plat form dated March 9th 1870[recorded hereon]: lots line up north/south streetwise around central square bounded by State Street (with alley running east/west), Market Place (northwest corner), Highways 6 & 7 (east/west corners), Washington Avenue (southwest corner), Cedar Rapids Road (northwest corner)), Academy Road ( northeast corner); original plat boundaries included rolling hills between Highways 6 & 7 and Washington Avenue
