Janesville is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Janesville County. The population was 68,531 at the 2010 census. Janesville is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the east side of the River Raisin. The population was 3,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Janesville-Waukesha, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Janesville was David Jenney in 1836. Around 1840, John Harden and John Funk built a log cabin near present day downtown Janesville on Big Sioux Creek. In 1846, Amos Smedley bought land west of present day downtown from David Jenney for $2 per acre (0¢ per square inch). In 1851, James Mapes organized what would become the first post office in Janesville with five mail sacks as its delivery service. A store opened in 1857 by George Lillis and his son George Lillis II to serve residents of southeast Janesville; it closed in 1861 due to financial problems. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech from the steps of State Capitol in which he spoke about "the difficulties we are met with here [in America], among our own people", calling for more help from Britain to solve these problems. This event began what would be called American expansionism and led to increased trade between Canada and America through new highways and ports being developed along this section of Lake Michigan called The Great Lakes Highway (now I-94). The town's name originated with John Harden who named it after himsef because he could not find a better place to live than where he had been born – Illinois County (now Rockford County). He then gave it back to David Jenkinson because there were no other settlers named Harden living anywhere else around that time! A post office operated at downtown Janesville from July 9, 1856 until May 1st 1865 when they moved outside due to continued Indian threat posed by The Ojibwe Indians (what is now Green Bay) across the river! On October 15th 1870 an act was passed giving all citizens over 16 years old free access to public education regardless of race or sex! With this change things changed forever for everyone living within those boundaries including future President Barack Obama who attended middle school here before attending college nearby!
