Hudson, Wisconsin is a town in the town of Hudson, Calumet County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Hudson was Captain John Smith in 1608 and he named it "Hudson" after his native colony in North America. In 1837, the Town of Hudson merged with the Town of Whitewater to form the city of Hudson. In 1847, two farmers from Michigan moved into Hudsonsville and started a grocery store which became one of the most successful businesses in that community. They were followed by other small business owners who helped build up what is today an exciting retail district centered around Main Street with its many restaurants and stores. It wasn't until 1958 when Interstate 94 was built through central Illinois that downtown Hudson grew significantly as people began commuting there for jobs in Cook County or nearby cities such as Lake Forest and Glenview. At its peak during the late 1990s-early 2000s, downtown had over 100 businesses including several high-end clothing stores and several dozen smaller retailers serving coffeehouses and fine dining items such as wine bars. Downtown also has seen a rise in art galleries since then as well as new developments like The Food Hall which opened on State Street just east of Main Street in 2006 and will soon feature an indoor/outdoor market hall measuring 30 feet by 60 feet with seating for 1,500 people that will be home to more than 50 local merchants selling everything from cheese to shoes to pet supplies

Hudson was founded in 1836 by John Hudson, a fur trader and landowner. The town grew quickly, thanks to the abundant resources available in the area. In 1848, Hudson became the capital of Wisconsin Territory. The town experienced some growth during the turn of the century when manufacturing began to grow around it. However, it was hit hard by World War I and II due to lack of industry and population losses. In 1960, Hudson merged with neighboring towns of Cedarburg and Menomonee Falls to form the city of Milwaukee.
Hudson is a Village in the town of Hudson, Wisconsin. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1852 by Nicholas J. Fenster and his wife Elizabeth B. Fenster, who named it for their father-in-law, John Hudson. The first post office opened in 1854. In 1857, John Averill organized a group of farmers to purchase 9 acres (3 ha) of land east of the village center and build a millrace to water their crops. This group became known as the "Old Hudsonites." In 1865, the first school was built in the village with three classrooms and a single teacher. The first public library opened in 1898; it is now called the Hudson Library and Museum. From 1870 to 1880, much of what is now downtown Hudson was part of farmland belonging to General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry regiment stationed at Fort Snelling on Lake Michigan's western shore. After Custer's death in 1890, most of his property was sold off and development began around what is now North First Street near present day Union Station; this area includes much of what is now downtown Hudson including some structures from when Custer lived there such as his cavalry barracks which are still standing today). In 1906, construction began on what would become known as Riverside Drive leading north from North First Street into downtown Hudson; this drive would eventually connect with present day Park Avenue (now River Road) northeast of town center creating an arterial road running through town that remains largely unchanged today despite being used for commercial purposes for over 100 years.
