The United States Army was formed in 1775 as a militia to counter the French and Indian War. The first professional army was created in 1801 when President George Washington ordered the creation of the U.S. Army Reserve. In 1916, Congress authorized the purchase of an army of up to 100,000 men and women for World War I. The American Expeditionary Force (AEF) was organized on December 10, 1918 and entered into combat on April 6th, 1919. The war ended with the armistice that provided Allied victory over Germany and Austria-Hungary. After World War II, America’s military totaled over 1 million Soldiers and Women who served in many conflicts including Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm/Iraq 1991-1991 and Afghanistan 2010-present. Army gift history can be traced back to 1861 when soldiers from Wisconsin began serving in Confederate General Robert E Lee’s forces during the American Civil War. From 1861 to 1865 Soldier gifts were given at home by citizens of Wisconsin as well as through donations from members of Congress. On July 16th 1862 Union Major General James Longstreet issued order No 1 ordering all Federal Soldiers within five miles of Richmond Virginia to give up their arms within 24 hours or be disarmed and put into labor camps! In 1865 after the war ended gift giving stopped because there were no new units being raised so soldiers had to return home with their old gear! In 1923 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed legislation authorizing Purchase Of A New Army which led directly to today's 1st Infantry Division!!! On November 15th 1924 First Lieutenant William G Hynes presented Secretary OF DEFENSE Harold Loder with a silver dollar depicting a Native American headdress for use as part of Departmental insignia This event is considered inauguration day for The Defense Department!!!!!! Howard, Wisconsin's army gift history goes back to 1872. The town of Howard was founded in 1852 by Luther King and his wife Lydia Warner. It was one of the first towns in the state to secede from Illinois. In 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army through the area and occupied Howard. The townspeople quickly erected a small military fortification nearby and began to store food and munitions for their own defense. The fortifications served as a shelter from Union bullets during the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place just two miles away at Harpers Ferry. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer retreated through Howard on his way to join the Union army at Gettysburg. Many of the townspeople followed him into battle, including Mrs. King and their three children. After Custer's death, many of the residents returned home and stored their munitions in preparation for another war with Great Britain or Mexico if they were ever needed again! In 1956, when missiles were introduced into warfare, President Dwight Eisenhower ordered that all American soldiers be equipped with automatic weapons (the M-1 Garand). This led to an increase in military gifts for Howard County over what had been available before! In 1957, Representative Don Young introduced legislation that would allow local governments to set up their own armies (the Missouri National Guard being an example). As a result of this legislation,Howard County became one of only a few counties in America to have its own Army department!
Howard, Wisconsin is a small town in the state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine-Muncie metropolitan area. Howard was founded in 1854 as a post office and has been continuously inhabited since then. The town is named for General John A. Howard who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as United States Minister to Mexico from 1846 to 1850. The first store in Howard opened on Main Street in 1854. The townspeople built their first school on School Avenue in 1865. In 1870, an oil well was drilled near the town and some people began trading goods with settlers living around it. When production peaked in 1923, many businesses closed because of high costs associated with drilling oil wells offshore; however, local residents kept up trade by selling goods made locally such as baked goods and farmers' crops). In 1970,Howard had 2 restaurants and 11 stores open while its population numbered only 1,580 citizens making it one of the smallest townships in Wisconsin according to unofficial estimates at that time (the population size increased to 4,752 by 1990) In recent years there have been several new businesses opening up including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company replaced First State Bank) and a large health care center which has greatly boosted the economy of the community since its construction.. In addition to this new business development there have also been several renovations done to various buildings throughout the township such as update to public hallways and replacing all but one streetlight within village limits due largely to concerns about darkening streets during summer months when most evening activities take place inside businesses or other lighted areas outside).
