Hartford, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Rock County. The population was 34,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Hartford were French traders in 1622, but it wasn't until 1795 that a permanent settlement was made on the east bank of the river Wabash. The site for Hartford had been chosen because it offered good timberland and water access from the north, making it an attractive location for fur traders and other early settlers. The town was founded by Daniel Hartman with help from his brother JohnHartman and their father IsaacHartman. In 1836, JohnHartman sold half of his interest in Hartford to Amos Kendall for $5,000 cash plus 10% of any future profits. Kendall renamed Hartford "Kendallville" after himself before selling it to George Stephenson in 1846 for $10,000 more than he had paid for it two years earlier! In 1850, when wagon roads were established through Rock County, Hartford became known as "the gateway to West Allis." By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in town with a payroll of $148,824 per year! In 1898-1900 Hartford was selected as one of seven towns in Illinois to be served by an electric light plant which would make them self-sufficient within five years! With this new development came increased economic opportunities and growth; by 1910 Hartford's population had reached 2,500! During World War II (1941-1945), many local residents joined military service and produced goods needed by troops fighting abroad or helping build supplies during wartime. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Hartford in 1836 when Solomon Westcott and his wife Deborah set out from Waukesha on their own wagon train. They were motivated by a desire to find new land where they could grow crops and build houses. AfterWisconsin's admission into Confederation in 1848, many New Englanders decided to move to Wisconsin because of its fertile farmland and good education opportunities.
