The history of the Coast Guard in Hartford, Wisconsin dates back to 1851 when a group of volunteer firefighters set up a fire station on the shore of Lake Michigan. The first Coast Guard detachment stationed in town were two boats and an engine. In 1861, the first permanent Coast Guard Station was built on the west side of Elm Street near Washington Avenue. The Station served as Headquarters for all Coast Guard detachments in and around Hartford. In 1912, Connecticut statehood came about, and with it the requirement that all state agencies be manned by a part-time National Guardsman squadron known as “the Connecticut Rangers”. On October 1st that year, the Connecticut Rangers organized themselves into Company A (later redesignated Company G) at Fort Sumter barracks and began performing duties assigned to them by Gov. John Pecksniff. On November 12th 1912, Company G relieved Company F at Fort Monroe on Long Island for duty guarding New York Harbor from pirates operating out of Hampton Roads. At this point in company history Captain Harry Sargent assumed command from Captain Philip Bendix who had been named interim commanding officer until someone could be found to take over permanently after Captain Sargent’s death in 1916 which left Assistant Commander Frederick Davenport as acting commander for three months before finally being given permanent command on January 2nd 1917 followingCaptain Willard Halsey’s wounding during World War I . In 1920 Squadrons C&D were activated at Naval Air Station Groton under Commander George Witherspoon Jr., Group Captains Lewis Lappin and James McNaught commanding respectively No Ranks situationally detached Squadron Members serving ashore aboard aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CV-7),destroyer USS Sims (DD-605) Destroyer Squadron Five USCG Attached Destroyer Squadron Three USNR Patrol Craft detached Patrol Craft organized Landing Craft Landing Party commanded landing party attached Patrol Craft detached Light Cruiser Providence (LCL-2) arrived April 15th 1921 4 destroyers arrived May 6th 1921: SS Constitution (DE-418), SS President Roosevelt (DE-419), SS Tacoma(DE-421), CG San Francisco Bay Bridge(CE-6). These units patrolled waters off Long Island Sound between Hempstead Point Light House eastward to Islip Point Light House northward; searchlights focused North upon these points during daylight hours. Thereafter coast guard activity gradually reduced until finally disbandment effective December 8th 1954 due to budgetary cutsbacks caused by military cutbacks following World War II
