After spending time growing cotton or other crops for years following settlement by early residents there were no immediate changes to energy production until 1865 when an oil well was drilled in neighboring Cook County under the name "Creek" Spring Oil Company and began production yielding sales revenue totaling $1 million during its first two years while also providing employment for over one hundred workers including many women who worked as maids and seamstresses in nearby Carbondale during this period; land prices had been rising rapidly since 1860 due to new railroads being built which made goods available at lower cost than before making agricultural products more accessible to consumers across America which led to increased demand for produce from northern farmers with little input costs relative to those back home so towns could prosper with industry while people continued farming villages become less important as transportation hubs connecting these areas with larger markets
