The navy has been a part of the Wisconsin community for centuries. The first navy ship in Greenfield was built in 1853. The Milwaukee Navy Yard built the USS President (1853-54) and USS Constitution (1855). Both ships were used in the War of 1812. The USS Milwaukee was used during the Civil War. During World War II, Greenfield produced over seventy naval vessels including submarines, torpedo boats, and naval minesweepers. Wisconsin’s navy produced many Medal of Honor recipients such as Rear Admiral John W. Fussell and Captain Arthur Landon Jr. The Wisconsin Naval Militia also provided soldiers for service in World Wars I and II. In 1995, the United States Congress designated Greenfield Harbor as a National Historic Site honoring Wisconsin’s maritime history.

The Navy has been in Milwaukee County since 1836. The first ship to come to Milwaukee was the USS Constitution, which arrived on July 4th, 1836. The first permanent naval station in Milwaukee was at Pier 1 on the riverfront. In 1861, the USS Monitor came here and Naval Base Milwaukee was established.
Greenfield is a small town in Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Greenfield arrived in 1835, and the town was platted in 1856. A post office was established here in 1857, and the first store opened in 1860. The community began to grow rapidly when railroad construction reached it beginning in 1870. By 1890, Greenfield had a railway station, two churches (one Presbyterian, one Methodist), a school (grades K-12), and a livery stable. In 1912, the town became an incorporated village; its first mayor was Wm Hickey. In 1960s Greenfield experienced significant economic decline as jobs moved away from manufacturing into new centers such as East Troy and Racine. However, since then it has seen modest growth as residents increasingly focus on their local businesses and services rather than leaving for greener pastures or other towns within reach. Today Greenfield remains an agricultural center with extensive vegetable production as well as some Manufacturing activity including paper products and plastics

These new ships were instrumental in helping to win World War I and eventually led to America's entry into World War II as a belligerent nation. In 1919, Admiral John Halsey became Commandant of Marine Corps after leading Marines during World War I and later served as Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) duringWorld War II. As CNO, he oversaw many important naval changes which helped improve America's maritime capabilities during both wars. Thanks to his leadership, American submarines became one of the most powerful weapons in warfare while also becoming well-known for their sustainability by further increasing submarine fleets throughout postwar decades until they were finally phased out by cruise missiles in 1977. With all these years' experience under his belt, Admiral Halsey is today considered one of America's most successful commanders - responsible for multiple successes both at sea and ashore within her armed forces
