The Greenfield Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was created on November 15, 1861, from a portion of the Fond du Lac Volunteer Cavalry. On December 12, 1861, it was assigned to the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Brigade. On September 17, 1862, it was transferred to the 3rd United States Infantry Division and fought at First Bull Run and Antietam. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
Greenfield, Wisconsin is a small town located in the Driftless Valley area of north-central Wisconsin. The population was 1,591 at the 2000 census and 1,822 at the 2010 census. Greenfield is part of the Green Bay–West Allis–East Gambrun statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Greenfield were the Menominee Indians who started living there in 1834. By 1845, some white men had also moved into the area and built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. George Washingburn (1785-1860), an American Revolutionary War veteran and fur trader, bought land from the Menominee in 1846 and named his new place after himself: Washington County Seat. In 1847 he built a sawmill on Deadman's Creek which became one of Greenfield's most important economic engines during its early years. In 1850, when Milwaukee was founded as a town by Danish immigrants, Washington County seat became Milwaukee because it would be their home for many years. However, by 1870 it had reverted back to Greenfield and soon developed into one of Wisconsin's leading farming communities with largescale productions of corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables; dairy products; lumber; manufacturing items such as wagon wheels; firearms; candles; soapstone bricks; pottery; mills employing up to 1,500 workers each year including three blast furnaces operated by steam power from 1862 until 1922 In addition to these primary industry sectors there was significant light manufacturing throughout much of what is now Greenfield as well as textiles such as clothing for both men and women embroidered with lace or toilettes made from flax yarn or cotton twill threads .
