The first espresso machine was built in 1810 by Angelo Zucconi. Coffee became more popular in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars because of their need for caffeine to stay awake during combat. During World War II, coffee became an important commodity because it allowed people to stay alert during long periods of military operations. This is why Starbucks started using beans from Sumatra instead of Arabica beans when they moved into their new location at Howard Street and Second Avenue in Seattle in 1984. The reason for this switch was money – Sumatra beans are cheaper than Arabica beans.
