Greendale is a small town in the heart of Wisconsin, located about 25 miles northwest of Milwaukee. It has a population of just over 1,000 people and is home to the Greendale Community School District. The Greendale school district was created in 2003 when the merger of two smaller districts in the area. The town was founded in 1853 by Reverend John Dickey as a farmstead on the east side of river Middleton. The original name for Greendale was Greenfield Village, which may have been derived from Greenfield Township, where it was located. In 1894 Greendale became part of the Sheboygan County municipality and lost its status as a village until it regained it in 2003 when its boundaries were changed to include portions of Prior Lake and Menomonee Falls. The first settler in Greendale was Reuben Hodges, who arrived in 1853 with his family and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The Hodgeses were followed by other families over the years, including those who settled at First Avenue and Harmony Road (now Northumberland Avenue). By 1860 there were more than 100 residents living in greeneryiewisconsin. In 1865 Isaac Blackman established an Agricultural Laboratory at what is now Third Street and River Middleton Road near present-day White Street/Avenue Kirdy Business Park west of town center. blackman’s lab continued operation until 1925; during its time it helped spawn many successfulWisconsin agricultural entrepreneurs including Wm Jett (founder & CEO - Wm Jett Foods Inc.), Leland Melvin (founder & CEO - Melvin Dairy), Vernon Anderson (founding CEO - Vernon Anderson Co.)and Alfred Larson (founder & CEO - Hanson Lens). Heinrich Bendix started manufacture dyes here too- he produced blue dye from tanzanite ore starting early 1800s In 1892 Rev G Fritsch added four acres to what are now Main Street and River Middleton Road to make way for his grocery store which would become one of Greendale’s most important businesses. His store began serving customers through Route 841 then known as State Highway 11 back then before becoming US Highways 41/841 once Interstate 94 went into effect . Over time his business grew along with population growth so that by 1924 he had moved out onto Broadway across from Factory No1 ersatz brick courthouse that served as Greendale’s first government building after being erected during Rural ELECTION OF 1923! In 1926 he sold this property to Great Northern Railroad Company effective 2nd day october 26th 1926 for $4,000 cash! greendale got its start . . . finally we all know our story really starts here 🙂

Greendale was originally purchased by the Sauk family in 1848. The first settler, Joseph Sauk, arrived in 1848 and built a cabin on the current site of Greendale. In 1854, John Kapp bought the property from Joseph Sauk and started to build a house. By 1870, he had erected a two-story frame house with a basement and three stories. In 1898, the Sauks sold the property to John Fritchey for $10 per acre. Fritchey developed it into what is now Greendale Township.
