Greendale, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Greendale, Wisconsin. The population was 1,545 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis–Beloit metropolitan area. The first settler in Greendale was John Hargrave in 1836. He and his family moved to the town from Sheboygan County,Wisconsin. In 1838, they built a cabin on what is now US-41 near present day Greendale High School. John Hargrave died in 1839 and his wife Alice moved into the house with their three children until their death in 1861. Their son Samuel then took over the property and built a large frame home on it which he occupied until his death in 1917. In 1904, Averill Dickinson bought land north of Greendale for $4 per acre from Samuel Hargrave Sr. Dickinson developed this land into a farm that became known as Dickinson Farmstead today. A post office was established at Greendale on July 8, 1876, and remained open until it closed on December 12, 1907. The present courthouse building was built between 1912 and 1913 by architect Auld & Hargrave as a replacement for an earlier structure which had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. The original brick building served as courthouse until 1959 when it becamethe local branch library under the governance of the Green Bay Public Library system
