Greendale is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. The name Greendale comes from the Ojibwe word "grizzle," meaning "a white cloth used to cover a fire." The first Europeans to visit Greendale were French fur traders in the late 16th century. They named the settlement after Jean-Baptiste Gregoire, Sieur de La Vallière's aide-de-camp at La Motte and Chateauguay on the Ottawa River. In 1836, the village of Greendale was platted by Leland Stanford and James Fenton; it straddled what is now east side of U.S. Highway 83. A post office was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. As early as 1855, there were concerns about land speculation and deforestation that had been going on in Douglas County; this led to passage of the Homestead Act that year by President John Tyler. By 1860, over half a million acres (2,000 km²) had been acquired for homesteading within Douglas County; much of this land became forested over time. In 1865–1866, construction began on what would become Northwestern Pacific Railway's main line between Chicago and Milwaukee; during these years Greendale developed into a small town with few businesses other than farming and ranching operations. In 1898–1900 construction began on Northern Pacific Railroad's new line from Duluth to Green Bay; this line sharply increased greendale's importance as a transportation hub for the area. That same year saw also establishment of one of greendale’s two schools: Grades K-8 School No 2 (now known as East High School). During World War II many residents left their homes to serve in various military units or during housing shortages elsewhere}; nevertheless many businesses continued to operate despite wartime restrictions on Commerce Activity which limited access to credit.; some examples include J & W Soap Factory who produced soap with anti-bacterial ingredients until 1958 when they switched production back indoors because no more exports could be done without violating US enemy trade policies.; local farmers continue working although crop yields have decreased due mainly to bad weather conditions such as freeze/meltdowns.; however there are also several greengrocers along I-94 bringing fresh produce into town every day
