Greendale, Wisconsin is a small town in the northeastern corner of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It has been inhabited by the Potawatomi people for over two hundred years. In 1847, Greendale was platted as a village and became a town on November 3, 1851. On January 1, 1904, Greendale became a city under state government control. The first settler in what is now Greendale was Isaac Hubbell who arrived in 1836 from Ontario County, New York. He founded Hubbell's Store on what is now Main Street in Greendale and named it after his home province of Ontario. The store continued to operate until about 1840 when it burned down due to an accident with an open fire. In 1847, Jethro Denton started farming land near present-day West Side Highway and Main Street in Greendale where he built a log cabin known as "Denton's Cabin". The first school in Greendale was established at this location on December 15th of that year by Cephus Bickerton with six students. Classes were held each day from Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm with instruction in reading and writing using Indian signs while parents waited outside for their children to return home from school. A second school building was erected later that year but it failed to meet the needs of the community so Denton built another log cabin nearby which he renamed "Homespun" after his wife Homespun Denton (1825–1912). This second school building still stands today and offers grades K-8 education today! He also opened up a general store which served the community for many years before closing operations around 1860 due to lack of customers or competition from other stores within the community. In 1848 Wm Haughey set up shop next door to homespun store and began selling goods such as eggs and flour. By 1850 there were three stores operating within minutes of each other inside what are now Olde Towne Mall Shopping Center located on Superior Avenue just south of I-794 eastbound exit ramp off I-94! In 1865 James McNulty opened his own grocery store one block north of homespun store across Superior Avenue from State Fairgrounds which expanded rapidly into multiple locations including Oneida Lake (now University Ave), Buena Vista Place (now Niles Rd), White Deer Plaza (now Eau Claire St) & finally Kenosha Plaza (now Waukesha Ave) later becoming part of Sheboygan Mall complex which included Powers department store & more! It wasn't until 1896 when John Prentice founded J&J Gourmet Bakery adjacent to power plant along Yahara Road northeast corner of Green Bay Rd NW then expanding into Block 16 (& current location tomorrow) across Yahara Road & Glidden Dr SElater becoming oneof Wisconsin’s longest continually operated bakeries stretching back over 125 years serving residents throughout Milwaukee County! In 1911 Edward Friesen opened Friesen’s bakery on Slinger Way southwest side just west side edge Of GLidden Drive between Racine Rd & Wisner Dr NEbecomingoneofWisconsin’s longest continuously operated bakery spanning back over 100yearsserving residents throughout Milwaukee County during its early days!
