In 1961, Lombardi changed the playbook to use a four-man front with linebackers stationed at the 25 and 30 yard line. With this new alignment, quarterbacks were no longer able to run untouched across the field. As a result, defenses became more creative in how they would attack offenses. In 1962, the Packers went undefeated and outscored their opponents by 100 points. This success led Lombardi to change his strategy again in 1963. He reverted back to using a three-man front with linebackers at the 25 and 30 yard line once again. This helped create more holes for offenses to run through while also stopping quarterback runs from becoming threats on third down or long touchdowns. Lombardi's coaching style paid off as his team won Super Bowl XII that year against Cincinnati Bengals by 21 points according to NFL history books (the official score does not reflect a forfeit due to an officiating error). After Super Bowl XII, linebacker Willie Young announced his retirement from professional football because he wanted children instead of risking injury on playing time which was often given away during championship games (during that era players could earn up TOFU for missing one game). Lombardi then hired cornerback Len Dawson as Young's replacement and led Milwaukee into two NFC Championship Games before losing both times (#14 vs #27 Detroit Lions) but still managed 5 division titles (three AFC), 3 conference championships*, 7 playoff berths (including 2 GAMES WITH WONNING SBs), 10 intra-divisional games played*, 9 of 12 meetings against NFC opponents *including 8 wins over Green Bay Packers
