That all changed when Major General Alfred S. Terry moved his command from Fort Snelling to Grafton in 1849. His fort served as a training ground for future American soldiers and it also became home to the first shooting range on the prairies. By 1861, Grafton had become an important military town and it played host to the Battle of Gettysburg. The town was destroyed by Union troops but its guns survived and were used in later battles such as Monmouth County, New Jersey and Antietam Creek Gap, Maryland. In 1865, Grafton became the capital of Wisconsin after Milwaukee was burned down by Confederate forces. It remained this way until 1868 when it was renamed Madison due to objections from Chicago residents who felt that their city would take away business from Grafton. In 1872, Milwaukee again became the capital with Grafton becoming its second city Limits (after Racine). Although gun ownership began to grow in Wisconsin during this time period, hunting wasn’t considered a significant part of rural life at this point. This changed with settler arrivals beginning to arrive in droves during the late 1800s seeking land outside of Boston and Chicago where they could establish themselves as farmers and ranchers. As these people began acquiring firearms for self-defense purposes, hunting shifted from an important pastime into something more distant from everyday life. Grafton was founded in 1836 by General David Dixon and his partner Major John Miller. It is named after George Fenton, 3rd Baron Grafton of Stamford, who had donated land for the town site. Grafton is located on the east side of Vernon County, just south of its border with Dodge County. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 598 people living in Grafton: 189 households (or 42% of the population) and 254 families (or 61% of the population). The racial makeup of Grafton was 94% White and 6% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2%. Of those 185 households 25% had children under age 18 living with them, 41% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 60% were non-families. 24%of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.15

Grafton, Wisconsin is a small town in the northern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located on the eastern border of Manitowoc County and central to the city of Green Bay. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Grafton has a rich history dating back to 1836 when it was known as "Grafton Junction". The village was founded by farmers from neighboring towns of Menomonee Falls and Oshkosh in 1836 as an agricultural community near Green Bay for raising livestock and selling produce from their homes. In 1840, Grafton became a stop on the Milwaukee-Davenport Railroad and soon developed into a thriving community with its own school, newspaper, brewery, hotel and other businesses. In 1855, Grafton became one of the first villages in Wisconsin to be incorporated as a municipality; it remains an unincorporated community today. The early 20th century saw growing prosperity for Grafton thanks to its location between two major industrial centers - Green Bay and Milwaukee - and itsBILITY to provide easy access to both markets through railroads (the Milwaukee Road served as integral transportation artery throughout much of this period). During World War II Grafton played an important role in training American troops during their campaigns in Europe; many soldiers who would later serve in World War III were born or raised here. After the war, Grafton experienced rapid growth due to new development along Highway 12 – including numerous factories that sprang up around town – but declined after 2000 due primarily to economic hard times statewide. In recent years there have been several efforts spearheaded by residents/citizens within Grafton itself – most notably via referendum in 2006 –to revive downtown business districts which have seen declines over time due largely to aging infrastructure combined with competition from larger cities nearby (Green Bay et al.). Grafton was first settled in 1836 by John A. Grafton and his wife, Martha. The town of Grafton was named for General David Garrard, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The early settlers were farmers and their families. They developed a market economy based on agriculture and trade with other towns in the region. In 1854, the Wisconsin Central Railroad was built through Grafton and it became an important transportation artery connecting Milwaukee with eastern Illinois and Michigan. The railroad led to increased trade and population growth in Grafton. By 1870, the town had a population of 1,700 people. Growth accelerated during the late 19th century as automobiles allowed for more access to goods and services at local merchantships throughout the area. During World War I, Grafton served as a munitions dump for various American units stationed in Europe. After the war, residents began to suburbanize their neighborhoods as they enjoyed better schools, opportunities for work outside of farming,and expanded malls that attracted shopping center development around them
