Grafton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east side of the Green Bay River. The population was 8,948 at the 2010 census, making it the largest town in Racine County. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grafton is one of many towns that are being developed as bedroom and commuter towns around Milwaukee due to its excellent schools and infrastructure. Grafton has been named "America's Best Place to Live" by Forbes magazine and "Best Place to raise a family" by WalletHub. The first settler in Grafton was Caleb Damon in 1836. By 1851, there were twelve families living here with eightyfive total acres ( thirty-six hectares ). In 1860, John Fenton bought three hundred acres (twenty-eight hectares ) from the Rasmusen family and began developing it into what would become Grafton Township. The first store opened in 1865 on State Street between West Side Highway and Park Avenue (). In 1897, Elijah Purdy purchased two thousand four hundred acres (ninety-six hectares ) north of Grafton from Jens Jensen for $10 per acre (). This land became known as Brownfield Township (). Purdy built his home there which still stands today () . He also founded what would become known as Waukesha County Agricultural Society (), which donated over one million dollars () towards education programs statewide (). The society also ran a small library here () . In 1924, Jonas Sorenson purchased five thousand acres (two hundred fifty hectares ) east of Grafton from Purdy for $2 per acre (). This land became known as newtowns () . Sorenson designed these communities according to American Planning Association standards (), which included single-family homes (), churches (), libraries (), swimming pools (), baseball diamonds (), shopping centers ()) . He also founded Wausau Memorial Hospital (); this hospital still operates today (). During World War II(), many businesses closed due to wartime shortages (); however, many continue to operate today such as Wausau Memorial Hospital (). Many more people moved into Grafton during this time including those who had worked at Wausau Memorial Hospital (); which helped contribute to its current population size (.
