Grafton was first settled in 1836 by Danish immigrants who named it after their home country, Greifswald, Germany. The town grew up around a post office and general store, which were built in 1840 and 1851 respectively. Grafton's first hotel was built in 1854 and soon became one of the largest inns in the region. The town experienced growth during the 1800s as a result of its position on the Mason-Dixon line between Illinois and Iowa; this led to it becoming known as "the Gateway to the Midwest." During World War II, Grafton became an important military center due to its location within easy reach of both Nazi Germany and Japan. The town also played an important role during the Cold War because it had access to natural resources such as lumber and uranium that allowed it to become one of the most prosperous towns in America. Grafton is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Grafton was Jean Baptiste de La Salle on November 16, 1763 when he stopped here for supplies on his way from Green Bay to La Crosse. He named it after General James Grafton who had recently arrived in America from England as a general under George Washington's command during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). On July 5, 1836, an act of Congress created Racine County and assigned its western border to Racine County including all of what is now Grafton Township except for a small corner near Lapham which belonged to Menomonee Falls. In 1837 John W NORTHWRIGHT donated land east of Lapham along with other tracts in that area for township development - making Grafton one of the earliest towns established in Racine County. On October 15th 1905, pioneer Reuben FOSTER set up a sawmill along the Menomonee River just north of present day Grafton due to increasing lumber demand in Wisconsin following construction of major new mills throughout that state during that decade by J P MORGAN & CO.. The sawmill continued operation until 1954 when it closed because Of exhaustion from high falls water levels caused by heavy rains; however some remnants remained standing until finally being destroyed by fire on May 10th 1984.Foster Museum According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Grafton was founded by John and Esther Grafton on April 20, 1847 as a farmstead on land that had been donated to them by Pastor Levi Morton. The community grew quickly, with three churches opening up around 1850: First Methodist, Swedish Lutheran, and Baptist; four stores opened; and six schools were built between 1850 and 1860. In 1871, Grafton became the county seat of Milwaukee County after it was chosen over West Allis because of its location within easy travel distance for both cities. The economy of Grafton has always been centered around agriculture due to its fertile soil and access to water resources. This has continued to be the case even as manufacturing moved into the town during recent decades: One major employer in Grafton since before World War II has been Waukesha Paper Company (now Kimberly-Clark), which manufactured paper products such as toilet paper, envelopes, T-shirts, towels, cups, and napkins until it closed its doors in 2006 citing economic conditions in China. Today however some businesses continue to operate such as Applebees restaurant which serves fresh local produce from their garden each day or Grafton's only dry grocery store which sells basic groceries including food items like milk and eggs along with a variety of local craft beers and wines
