The town began as a small community on the east side of the Menomonee River in 1854. It was named for General James Grafton, an American Revolutionary War general and settler who had served as sheriff of Racine County from 1793 to 1796 and as lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army during the period from 1775 to 1783. The original town site was located on what is now North 5th Street between State Road 54 and West Washington Avenue. In 1867, Grafton incorporated as a village, but it reverted to its separate status until 1969 when it became a town again under Act 181 of that year. Grafton isSituated on major east-west routes including I-94 (the "Wabash"), US Highway 45 (the "Milwaukee Freeway"), Wisconsin Route 41 (the " Lincoln Highway"), and state Routes 10 (the "Milwaukee Beltway") and 9 (the "Ozaukee Beltway"). The Menomonee River flows through Grafton center with access from most of these routes via two bridges: one over the river near downtown and one over US Highway 45 near Stroudsburg Airport. Interstate 94 serves as both main thoroughfare into/out of Grafton and also provides service to neighboring Racine County as well as points north including Green Bay and Wausau beyond; this freeway has become known locally by various names such as "The Drive" or simply "I-94". A new expressway - Interstate 345 - will connect I-94 with Milwaukee proper via Racine County in addition to serving nearby Steel Lake; this project is scheduled for completion in 2020. A number of historically significant buildings are located within or around Grafton – some dating back centuries while others were built more recently – making it an interesting place to visit for history buffs or visitors interested in learning about early Wisconsin settlements throughout central Minnesota region which were also heavily influenced by early westward pioneers such as James Grafton Jr.. Among these structures are several churches dating back to 1822 that stand along North Main Street just outside of downtown; these buildings have been extensively restored over time and display impressive Colonial Revival architecture typical of those days.
