Grafton, Wisconsin is a small town located in the central part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Calumet County. Grafton has a rich antique and farm history dating back to before European settlement in what is now Wisconsin. The first white settler in what would become Grafton was George Stephenson who established a wagon road from Chicago to Green Bay in 1837. Stephenson's road traversed present-day Grafton and passed through parts ofnow Beloit and Waukesha counties before reaching its current terminus at Griggs Road near Allendale in Marinette County on Lake Michigan. The town has been settled byeuropeans for over two centuries, with earliest evidence dating back to 1793 when French traders purchased land from Native Americans around present-day Grafton. The first store opened in 1827, and by 1840 there were six stores and two hotels in operation within the town limits alone. By 1860, Grafton had reached its peak as an agricultural center with more than 100 businesses providing goods and services to its residents including grain Elevator shops, fruitereries, saddlers, Provisional Arsenal (a precursor to today's Mecom Arsenal), blacksmiths and brewers among others In 1887 it became one of five towns chosen as sites for the new Milwaukee metropolitan area which grew rapidly due to heavy industry growth across much of Midwest America during that time period In 1970 Grafton lost its status as the county seat when West Bend replaced it on a proposal by then Calumet County Supervisor Don Koehler after West Bend experienced rapid growth following incorporation into Calumet County following passage of a new state statute granting such autonomy . However, despite this setback GRAFTON still boasts some impressive historical milestones including becoming one of only four communities – along with Racine (Wis.), Kenosha (Wis.) & Milwaukee (WI) – designated as National Historic Landmarks for Agricultural Preservation purposes pursuant to Urban/Rural Survival Act Amendments Of 1966 . In 1922, Grafton became an incorporated city and has remained that way ever since. The team currently plays at Wisconsin State University as part of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). On October 12, 1848, Grafton was incorporated as a town by the Wisconsin General Assembly. The first post office in Grafton was established on March 3, 1849. On May 22, 1851, the first grocery store opened in Grafton. Grafton's economy depended upon agriculture until the mid-19th century when manufacturing became more important with the development of local mills andurden. In 1907, Grafton's population reached 910 people. By 1930, only 150 people lived in Grafton; however, it remained an important center for agriculture and commerce until the early 21st century when there were only a few small businesses remaining and most residents commute to other nearby towns.
