The first coffeehouses in Grafton, Wisconsin were founded in 1847 by Nicholas Appel and his wife, Catherine. The couple opened the first coffeehouse on Market Street, which was known as the Green Dragon. The first coffee shop in Grafton was a small, one story building that served roasted coffee and tea. The popularity of roasted coffee soon spread throughout the town, and Nicholas Appel began to open other stores. In 1856, he opened the Blue Angel Coffee House on west Fourth Street. This store became very successful and continued to serve roast coffee until it closed in 1959. In 1865, John Kappelman started manufacturing roasters of ground coffee using his son-in-law's mill at 4th and Main Streets. The business grew quickly and Kappelman moved to a larger building in 1870 at 6th and Main Streets. The business continued growing until it closed in 1915. In 1916/17, Julius Rosen started producing ground beans for Wabash Brewing Company at 8th and State Street which became very successful with its light body style of roast (later changed to dark). Rosen later reopened the company under the name Julius Rosen Coffee Company with new facilities at 9th & State Streets before closure in 1961. Helden Coffee Roasters opened their doors on University Avenue near High School in 1967; this store continued operations until it closed in 1993. In 1971/72 Donny Deutschman started making French press filter coffees from whole bean beans at 1215 Webster Avenue (now part of Best Buy). This store also operated until it closed in 1996 after several years of operation.. Donny Deutschman is considered to be one of the early pioneers of artisanal espresso brewing because he developed what is now called "Deutschman'sippi" - an espresso blend that has heavy Italian tannins accents while being milder than most espresso blends available today.. Grafton is a town located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,038 at the 2010 census. Grafton is the most populous municipality in Dane County and the second-most populous town in Wisconsin after Milwaukee. It was first settled by German Americans in 1836. The name of Grafton comes from George Washington Carver, who came to the area in 1847 as part of a group of settlers looking for a new home after their crops failed in Illinois. Grafton was originally known as "Carver's Prairie", as George Washington Carver named it after himself and his family. He arrived here with his wife Mary and four children on October 10, 1847, during what would be their only trip westward. Carver spent time studying natural resources and cattleraising near De Pere before settling down on this land which he called "Carvers Prairie". He became one of the largest landowners in Dane County and played an important role in developing Grafton into a community that today remains important to its residents. One of Grafton's early mayors was John Aiken (1858-1940). Aiken served two terms beginning on November 3rd, 1858 and ending on May 6th, 1940; he also served as county treasurer from 1886-1900. Another early settler was Isaac Cook (1811-1886), who built up a large property around present day Park Drive/Wisconsin Highway 12 north of downtown Grafton. Cook operated a grocery store within walking distance of his home until about 1880 when he moved out to start his own farmstead north of town center where he raised hay and vegetables until 1906 when he sold all his land back to the government for $10 per acre ($2 million today). In 1912 Cook donated 5 acres (20 hectares) northwest of downtown Grafton to make way for what is now Central High School; Cook died four years later leaving behind much legacy including one of America's earliest high schools - now known as Mitchell High School - which opened its doors on August 15th, 1916!
