Glendale is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,980 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Glendale were French Canadians who arrived in 1818 and named it La Glencourt after its natural resources (gleamstone, quartz, and coal). In 1838, John A. Mathias founded a small sawmill on the river near present-day Glendale and began trading with nearby towns such as Racine and Waukesha. By 1880, Glendale had a post office, two churches, three schools, a store, and two hotels/motels. The first telephone line was established in 1896; by 1912 there were nine telephones in Glendale alone! In 1836, the town of Glendale was founded by John H. Richardson. The community grew rapidly due to the products of its various mills. By 1865, Glendale had a population of over 100 people and began to develop into a small city. In 1876, Glendale was incorporated as a city and soon developed into one of the most important transportation hubs in Wisconsin. The city played an important role in the development of both the Milwaukee railroad system and Wisconsin's agricultural industry.glendale also experienced significant growth during World War II as it became one of the few American cities to support military activity. After the war, Glendale experienced a period of decline which contributed to its subsequent loss of social and economic stability. However, recent efforts by Mayor Bob Kapp (a Democrat) have revived hope for glendale's future and are making progress towards restoring its former glory
On May 3, 1847, the first post office in Glendale was established. The town was named for John A. Glidden, a wealthy landowner from nearby Fond du Lac.
