Germantown, Wisconsin is a village located in the town of Racine in the county of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The population was 7,648 at the 2010 census. Germantown was founded in 1836 by German immigrants and has been part of the Racine metropolitan area since its incorporation as a municipality in 1959. The Village of Germantown paid $1,000 to purchase an establishment known as "the Grosse Pointe" on the current site of West Side Market in 1836. At that time, it was one of three villages forming what is now Racine. The other two villages were Waukesha and Sheboygan which continued to exist until their incorporations into municipalities in 1959. The Village first erected a schoolhouse on the present site of West Side Market in 1839-40. That building still stands and is used as Village Hall today. A new schoolhouse was built for the village by John Laughlin and dedicated on November 3, 1840. It remains standing today and is used as a community center. On October 1, 1841, the village changed its name from Germantown to Germantown following annexation by Racine County from Waukesha County. Germantown remained an agricultural community with small-scale lumbering operations until about 1920 when larger mills began to open up throughoutWisconsin including those at Green Bay and Superior which soon took over all aspects of village life except religious services and grocery shopping for residents inside their homes (a practice that continued until after World War II). By 1925 there were also several frame houses remaining within modern day Germantown limits dating back to circa 1830s when land for what would become downtown became available along with some other land grants; these included sections lying east/west 2 blocks south/north across First Street from then existing home Lots No 4 & 5 on North Santa Fe Avenue between west side Second Street (now north side First Street) & east side Third Street (now south side First street). In addition there were several parcels located northeast corner lot off Dearborn Road between East Main StN&W&West State StE&southwest corner lot off Lake Drive just north of current day intersection with Dearborn Road (just east or southeast corner lot) – these parcels are now part of northwest quadrant Lot #3 NW corner lots near intersection with East Main StN&WNW&West State StE
